In the neuroplastic symptoms / mind body / pain reprocessing therapy world, we only hear *Recovery* Stories. Those are the only “Success Stories” out there.

I aim to change that.

I advocate for any of you living with serious, more *structural* conditions with neuroplastic amplifiers.

Our stories of healing are just as inspiring, even if we haven’t “recovered.”
My clients — with cancer, MS, ALS, Parkinson’s, Post Stroke pain, tethered spinal cords— are some of the bravest, most extraordinary people I have ever had the honor of knowing.

Your stories deserve to be told too.

I speak at the conference on Saturday with you in my heart. You give me the courage to overcome the nerves and dare to say something different!
🍀

Don’t wait, get yourself out there! ✨ Fight the inertia (which can be strong, I know all too well!): It’s worth it, especially if you live with chronic pain, illness, and/or disability. 🍂🍁🌲

What can you celebrate today? Even if it’s as small as a 🍁? Ferris is right. Life— like autumn in New England—moves at lightning speed. But somehow . . . pausing for a minute can slow it all down.

Don’t let *them* tell you what *you* are capable of.
⚡️ 💪
For everyone in the chronic pain, invisible illness, and disabled community who are actively rewiring their brains: Shifting how we view disability and pain changes everything.
If you are using the Curable app, practicing pain reprocessing therapy, or exploring mindbody healing—keep moving forward. You have far more agency than you think. Even if you also have something “structural” going on, like my clients and I do.
Your brain is capable of incredible transformation. 🧠✨

Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt gaslit? ✋🙋🏾‍♀️🙋‍♂️🤚🙋

Yeah, me too.

Many people living with persistent pain or other chronic symptoms have experienced gaslighting by (often well-meaning) medical or other health professionals.

You’re told that what you’re experiencing isn’t real or isn’t happening as you perceive it. You’re told your perceptions are overblown or your nervous system is overly sensitive. You may even be told not to listen to your body and that you must override your sensations or intuition.

So you start to doubt yourself.

Maybe you experience a flare and try to convince yourself that you are safe and that nothing is wrong, all while your brain is screaming otherwise.

Maybe you even outright dismiss or deny your own sensations or feelings.

It’s as if you just can’t trust yourself. You don’t even know which end is up or which direction to go anymore.

Self-gaslighting is a real beast. 👹

I know this from personal experience, and I help clients living with chronic symptoms unwind internalized gaslighting and build self trust.

Good news: Self trust is a skill you can practice, a muscle you can build. 💪

Strong self trust is deeply healing. ✨

Do you live with physical pain?

Then you know having chronic physical symptoms can cause social distress: interpersonal conflict, relationship rifts, job loss, social isolation, loneliness, and more.

But did you know that social pain can trigger or amplify physical pain?

Loneliness and social rejection light up the same areas of the brain as physical pain. It can literally hurt physically to be marginalized, shamed, or discriminated against due to your race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, culture, religion, ability, age, or immigration status.

If you think about it, it makes sense.

Social rejection in early human history was often a death sentence. You needed your tribe to survive. The brain sets off danger signals when you feel socially rejected, which increases the volume dial of physical distress. In the early days, social rejection was a life-or-death threat, and the brain still treats it that way.

But the brain isn’t wrong. We absolutely still need other people to survive.

Here’s the good news:

Just as social distress can increase physical distress, social support, connection, and belonging can decrease physical distress, softening or dampening the physical pain you experience.

Not convinced?

Sign up for a group and find out for yourself! (See what I did there?). My fall Sage Group is now closed, but I am currently taking names for anyone interested in the next group starting in January. I’ll teach my S.A.G.E. approach to chronic symptoms, so you can build the skills you need to live life fully regardless of whatever else is happening. The best part? The groups are capped at 7 people. This enables deep sharing, rich discussions, and meaningful support. You shouldn’t have to wait until you’re “better” to start living again.

We were never meant to do this alone. ♥️

Have you ever experienced a softening in your pain when you felt a real sense of social support, connection, or belonging?

Not sure if you’ve heard, but Life is short. Don’t wait till you’re “better” to start living again.

See those crutches? 🩼 I’m on them long term— well over a decade all told. I can’t climb a tree, or even go for a short crutch walk, most days of the year. But some days? The stars align, the leg pain is not as intense, my hand and shoulder injuries subside, and I can get out there and inch worm my way up a tree that fell by the river.

Why? No reason. It’s just fun.

Do I look ridiculous? Yup.

Joy is often ridiculous. It makes no sense. It is entirely irrational. It often seems like it’s just not reading the room. But it doesn’t care.

We call mind body work “work,” but sometimes it’s the opposite. My clients and I actively work to find ways to bring joy, play, and fun back into their lives, even when it looks different than before. Most of the time it’s not big things like shimmying up trees with one bad leg.

Little things like that first sip of coffee. Sitting with your face to the sun. An unexpected break when a meeting gets canceled. Taking out colored markers and a piece of paper. Making a stranger smile.

Joy is the one of the most powerful forms of medicine there is.

But you do have to look for it. No matter how high the pain, no matter how dark the day, no matter how bad the news, it’s always out there to be found. (Joy, as it turns out, is also an act of *resistance.*)

I have an opening for a longer term 1-1 client coming up soon. Learn more at thesagepractice.com

Have you been working so hard on trying to bring your chronic symptoms down — like SO hard, every day, for so long — that you are starting to get really frustrated? 😖

Maybe some part of you just wants to quit?

It feels too hard.

It is too hard.

Ask yourself this instead:

How can I (significantly!) ease up on the pressure I’m putting on myself today?

That part of you having a virtual tantrum? It’s onto something.

Intensity and urgency don’t ease the intensity and urgency of your symptoms. Ease does.

✨ Be gentle and kind with yourself.
✨ Go softer not harder.
✨ Slow down.
✨ Take a break.
✨ Give yourself permission to stop trying so damn hard.

That easing up of pressure? *That* is what your nervous system needs from you to de-escalate. 🧘‍♀️

Even those of us with significant experience a sense of relief when we listen to a nervous system begging for us to ease up.

Forget perfect.

Practice makes progress.

Ease up.

I had a beautiful crutch walk today. Not only was the view worth getting out of the house and putting on pants for (not necessarily in that order), but I had a great idea while I was sitting by the river. More on that later. I hope you can do ✨at least one thing ✨ that lights you up this weekend. Pain, illness, and mobility devices be damned!
