Last month a nurse added a clamp to the Bear’s G-tube so Matthew won’t play with his own G-tube clamp. Now ICU nurse added an artery line to the bear so Matthew won’t switch his own A line on and off. Poor bear is gettting everything Matthew has 😂

Please pray for Matthew… he is back to ICU AGAIN!

Doctors tried to push his gut to take enteral meds to protect heart, prevent clots, control blood pressure, and allow him to go back home. But his gut just could not tolerate and finally reached a tipping point. He vomited every 10-20 minutes and gut stppped working completely. No meds could to in enterally and he had to come back to ICU for dripping BP meds. We are in a dead end and stuck in hospital!!

I will update details later but please pray for Matthew and I that something will change today!! God, give us a way out!

Matthew’s doctor Ai Yamasaki made this for him since he loves the character “Mayor Humdinger” in the and we can hardly find a toy of this “bad guy” on the market!😂 What a beautiful handicraft!!

4.14. Matthew is out of ICU and back to complex surgery unit. B*H Complex Care team started to step in and helping coordinating all the doctors and treatments🙏

Four things we would like to figure out before getting discharged:
1. Luckily with all the MRIs (heart and full body vessels) and blood tests cardiologists and rheumatologies did in the past week ruled out some whole body immune and blood vessel systems diseases like Kawasaki. But the blood pressure is still high and heart artery is still dilated. We hope BP get stabilized before we go home.
2. There are too many meds to manage and some might need to be weaned. Due to the few mistakes in the past few weeks, Matthew had sever drug withdrawal and intolerance issues. We hope Complex Care could help us simplify the meds for us to be able to handle at home and avoid mistakes.
3. We will need to find specialized doctors for his medical issues. Like we come to Boston for short gut specialist. But now lessons learned that we need a dedicated kidney doctor especially specialized in hypertension too.
4. We need some help on the transitioning from hospital to home, such as outpatient follow-ups appointments, prescribed therapies, meds and pharmacy management, Medicare, supporting groups, home set-up, school, etc. And potentially another rehab hospital stay to bridge the gap.

Still in ICU. Cardiologists and Rheumatololgists ordered two MRIs for heart and whole body vessels. Pray that nothing is acute/sever but we can get some answers to his current heart dysfunction and previous heart/bleeding issues mysteries not yet solved during Johns Hopkins stays.

4/6 Back to ICU. BP is out of control and ECHO shows heart function declined again (EF about 50).

BP has been drending up after 3/21 surgeries. Matthew had a lot of headache and We still don’t know the reason yet. 4/1 he had another anesthesia to revise the very tight stoma. The surgery went very well. But after the surgery, Matthew started to vomit more and more, like 15~30 times a day. Renal doctors increased dose and frequency and types of blood control meds (labetalol, isradipine, hydralazine) and BP bounced back faster and faster.

Luckily G-tube has been working very well and he seemed to tolerate feeding well. Brain MRI and CT on 4/4 ruled out any big changes in brain. CT and X-rays on 4/5 ruled out any dangerous issues in intestines and lungs. Cardiologists came and told us that they don’t think Matthew’s heart had any problems. His heart now is as good as normal kids. Just in case, they suggested an ECHO. However, the ECHO result on 4/5 came back alarming… Cardiac doctor said this time is different from the last heart failure since the situation is much better. But, he said the important thing three times, “bring the BP down, bring the BP down, bring the BP down!” And he brought up a good suggestion — get ICU involved.

Charge nurses also noticed 4/5 that they missed several dose of baclofen since Matthew’s G-tube was set to be drained and somehow his clonidine patch dose suddenly reduced to just 1/3 what it should be this week (there were three patches and suddenly one nurse realized there’s only one left) ! As what ICU doctor said when they came, “ weaning baclofen is no joke!” Meds weaning is the same as drug weaning. With these two meds messed up, it explains well why Matthew had such miserable days! Poor Matthew… 😭

We still don’t know the reason of the high blood pressure after March 21(kidneys issues? Anesthesia issues?). But at least we know why it got so bad in the past few days after the 4/1 surgeries (drug weaning on top of high BP). No matter what, the BP treatment is urgent. 4/6 Matthew is transferred to ICU where it is allowed to drip BP medicine continuously and adjust the dose on the fly to manage the BP.

I should have prayed unceasely…. I’ve been busy looking for a place in Boston for us to stay after Matthew gets discharged. Today when I grabbed food in the afternoon and finally sat down to eat, I felt exhausted. One verse came in my head “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.“ — Matthew‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬ ‭KJV‬‬.

I put down my food and prayed. Human are so limited and make mistakes. How would I dare not to pray!!! God, please guide the doctors and nusrses hands for whatever they do on Matthew.

Matthew tolerated G-tube feeding at least at the NJ tube speed! So no more procedure plan to put a new NJ tube now or a GJ tube in the near future!! Thanks for all the prayers!

However, Matthew’s blood pressure has been out of control. Renal doctors scheduled daily IV blood pressure control medicine but it’s still going up to 150. He vomited badly due to headache and dizziness early this morning and even needed additional dose of medicine. All of this started happening after the surgeries last Thursday and we are still trying to figure out the reason…. Next Monday, Matthew is scheduled to have another surgery to revise and enlarge his stoma (endoscopy found his stoma is currently too tight and possibly cause some blockage). But I’m very worried about that his blood pressure could be a risk. Pray that the doctors will have wisdom from God to make the right decision.

Picture is a chart of the food Matthew can try to eat in the future only if his intestines adaptation goes well after years and years rehab…

Many of these hard and also clueless periods of time in the past few months, I feel like, yes God promised us hope, but it is now lying in the grave… I don’t know when I can see the gleam of it, I don’t know why everthing happened, and I don’t know what God is working on right now…

I can only wait, wait, and wait with faith that the grave stone will be rolled away and hope is rising very soon.

Prayer request for this weekend:
1. After surgeries this Thursday, Matthew’s blood pressure has been rising from 110 to 155. Early this morning, after measured several times at 150, he was given prescribed PRN labetalol immediately to reduce blood pressure. Please pray for his blood pressure and that God will give doctors wisdom to know the reason. Hopefully this is not due to a more serious issue (about heart or kidney) than just post surgery stress/pain.
2. Matthew’s Nosal-Jejunum feeding tube fell out during the surgeries. Doctors and nurses planned to put in a new one through fluoroscopy again. But I asked to postpone to do it after the weekend, just to give him a break. Also I asked to give him a chance to try his newly installed G-tube. If his stomach miraculously started to work (which was proved to be not working in the past few months and in a fluoroscopy just two weeks ago), he doesn’t need to put in another temporary NJ or a new permanent GJ tube (which needs an additional surgery later) to get feeds bypass his stomach anymore. So far, Matthew feels ok after resuming his feeds and even after nurse increasing his slow feeds speed from 5 to 7 ml per hour yesterday afternoon. Please continue to pray for his stomach to be more awake!

Children’s Hospital three procedures under one anesthesia today: 1) 3-way endoscopies; 2) PEG for G-tube; 3) Botox injections. 🙏🙏
at Hale building made a teddy bear and storybook helping Matthew to understand the lines and tubes on his body: NJ tube, central line, ostomy, and G-tube. So much helpful for me to use to explain to Matthew all the changes to his body. But he seems doesn’t care much about it (thanks to his mild autism??) and he is fine as long as he can watch and there’s no pain/vomiting. 😅
