A remarkable veterinary achievement has restored the vision of Kendi, a 27-year-old white rhino at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, following an exceptionally rare and highly complex cataract surgery. The groundbreaking procedure, carried out through a collaboration between Disney veterinarians and specialists from the University of Florida, is now being recognized as an important advancement in the care of large mammals and could help improve treatment options for rhinos around the world.
Kendi, who has lived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom her entire life, first drew concern when animal care experts noticed subtle cloudiness developing in her right eye. Because veterinarians and keepers closely monitor the animals under their care, the change was detected early.
