When James Ball was diagnosed with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), his condition had deteriorated rapidly. Within a month, he went from experiencing weakness in his legs to being unable to walk or even get out of bed. His recovery at Mass General Brigham was anything but a one-person effort.

A multidisciplinary team—including Salvia Jain, MD, Steven McAfee, MD, Allie Zunick, Marissa Dittrich, Lorrie Kubicek, and Lauren DeMarco, LICSW–brought together expertise across oncology, physical and occupational therapy, music therapy, and social work to treat James’ cancer while helping him regain his strength, independence, and quality of life.

After months of intensive treatment and rehabilitation, James went from being paralyzed to mowing his own lawn. Today, he lives independently and feels stronger than before he got sick. “I can pretty much can do everything I need to do now,” he said.

His story is a powerful reminder that cancer care extends far beyond treating the disease itself. It takes collaboration across specialties and a tremendous amount of perseverance from patients to help people regain their lives after cancer.
