🩸 Sometimes the smallest details can make a blood draw feel much easier.

We draw blood in our office to prepare PRF (platelet-rich fibrin), which we incorporate into many of our surgical procedures and into our SRP/deep-cleaning protocol.

And because we do blood draws regularly, I pay attention to the little things that can make the experience more comfortable.

🤍 First, I make sure the arm is comfortable and well supported.

🤍 I use a soft tourniquet that is gentler against the skin.

✊ I ask the patient to make a fist and turn it slightly toward the body. Then I palpate the vein — I don’t choose a vein simply because I can see it. I like to feel for one that is springy and appropriate for the draw.

💧 Hydration makes a difference. I usually encourage patients, when appropriate, to drink about 20 oz of water before the appointment so they arrive well hydrated.

🦋 And I like using a small butterfly needle for the blood draw.

Once the blood is collected, we process it to prepare PRF from the patient’s own blood.

We incorporate PRF into many of our surgical procedures, and in our office it is also part of the protocol we use with scaling and root planing (SRP/deep cleaning).

Whether we’re preparing for surgery or periodontal therapy, drawing the blood may be only one small part of the appointment — but I still want to make that part as comfortable as possible.

What makes a front implant look natural? It’s not just the tooth. 🦷

When an implant replaces a front tooth, I pay a lot of attention to the gum tissue surrounding the crown.

The goal is for the gum to frame the implant crown naturally and blend with the neighboring teeth.

That’s one reason we don’t always rush directly to the final zirconia crown.

We can first use a temporary PMMA crown to help gradually shape the gum tissue. Little by little, we can modify the contour of the temporary and allow the tissue to respond before designing the final crown.

Sometimes less is more. Rather than aggressively removing gum tissue, I prefer to preserve as much as possible and carefully guide its shape when the case allows.

Because with a front implant, replacing the tooth is only part of the job.

We want you to smile without thinking about which tooth is the implant. 🤍

Ever wonder why The Wand beeps while we’re getting you numb? 🔊🦷

That sound is actually giving us information while we deliver the anesthetic.

The Wand is a computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery system. As I gently position the tip near the tooth and gum, the system gives me feedback that helps me deliver the anesthetic in a slow, controlled way.

And we don’t necessarily need the same amount of anesthetic for every situation.

For example, if we’re simply making a sensitive area more comfortable during a dental cleaning, we may need much less anesthetic than we would for treatment on a tooth.

That’s one of the things I love about this technology: control and precision.

The goal isn’t just to get you numb.

It’s to use what we need, where we need it, while making the experience as comfortable as possible. 🤍

“Can you numb me without poking me?” 💉❌🦷

Fear of the injection is one of the things we hear most often from patients.

That’s one reason we use The Wand, a computer-controlled system that delivers local anesthetic slowly and precisely. Depending on the procedure, I can gently position the tip along the gum and allow the anesthetic to be delivered in a controlled way.

For some patients, that can make the numbing experience feel much more comfortable than what they remember from a traditional dental injection.

And yes — we can even use it when a sensitive area needs a little extra comfort during a cleaning.

Small details matter.

Because sometimes making dentistry easier isn’t about doing less dentistry.

It’s about changing how the patient experiences it. 🤍

Are your teeth too sensitive for a dental cleaning? 🦷

For some patients, a cleaning is no big deal.

For others, sensitive teeth or tender gums can make certain areas very uncomfortable — and sometimes that discomfort is the reason they keep postponing their appointment.

We don’t want you lying there thinking, “Please don’t touch that tooth.” 😅

When appropriate, one option we can use is The Wand, a computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery system.

In this video, I’m gently positioning the tip between the tooth and gum and delivering local anesthetic to help make the area more comfortable before we continue with the cleaning.

The Wand controls the delivery of the anesthetic at a slow, controlled rate, which can be especially useful when we want to anesthetize a specific area.

It’s another tool we can use to adapt the appointment to the individual patient rather than expecting every patient to tolerate treatment in exactly the same way.

When I cement a zirconia restoration to a ceramic implant, I don’t go straight to the cement.

My workflow includes surface preparation, cleaning with Ivoclean, the appropriate primer/adhesive step, and then cementation.

Each step has a purpose, and the specific products and technique should follow the manufacturers’ instructions for the zirconia, adhesive and cement being used.

Cementation may be one of the final steps—but it shouldn’t be an afterthought.

In our ceramic implant class, we teach the complete workflow from case selection and digital planning to surgery, temporization, restoration and final cementation.

Worried about restoring a ceramic implant? 🦷

This is one of the concerns I hear from dentists who are interested in ceramic implants:

“But how do I restore it?”

Digital dentistry has made this process much more predictable.

In this case, the restoration is digitally designed using Exocad, and the ceramic margins are planned as part of the restorative workflow.

Before I ever seat the restoration in the patient’s mouth, I can place it on the analog and verify how it fits and seats.

That means I already have valuable information about the restoration before the patient is in the chair.

For me, that translates into a more efficient and controlled restorative appointment, with less guesswork and fewer unnecessary chairside adjustments.

Digital planning + a systematic restorative protocol = a much more predictable workflow.

And this is exactly the kind of detail we teach in our ceramic implant course — not only how to place an implant, but how to take the case from diagnosis and planning all the way to the final restoration.
