After an extraction, and after a ceramic implant placement ,we ask many patients to keep their Essix retainer in place continuously for the first few days. This helps protect the blood clot, stabilize the area, and support healing.
What you may notice:
🩸 Some oozing or bleeding is normal. We use PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) to support healing, which helps create a healthy blood clot. We want enough clot formation to reduce the risk of dry socket, but not excessive bleeding.
👃 A temporary odor is also normal. Food particles and saliva can become trapped under the Essix. Because we intentionally leave space between the healing gums and the Essix to allow for normal post-surgical swelling, food can collect there and ferment, creating an unpleasant smell.
✨ The good news? This is usually temporary and improves as healing progresses.
⏳ Be patient with your body. Healing is not always pretty, but it’s often a sign that your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
If you have severe pain, excessive swelling, fever, or heavy bleeding, contact our office right away.
