Located in Boyds, MD, Cultivate Rehabilitation, LLC Services is a therapist-owned private practice that offers occupational therapy services in various settings, including nature-based therapy, hippotherapy, and home- and clinic-based therapy. Hippotherapy is a treatment tool utilized by OT, PT, and Speech Therapists. The therapist controls and modifies equine movement to engage sensory, motor and cognitive systems. Horses provide the client with sensory rich experience. The therapist manipulates equine movement and selects a specific equine partner for a patient based on the horse's sensory properties such as the proprioceptive, vestibular and kinesthetic input that their movement provides. This treatment tool uses the sensory integration frame of reference to encourage interaction between sensory systems and provides information that plays a large part in a child’s learning and behaviors.

Cultivate also offers therapeutic riding lessons. Therapeutic riding lessons are adaptive, recreational riding lessons for children and adults with disabilities. Cultivate primarily serves children, teens and young adults. Occupational therapy services start at age 2 and therapeutic riding lessons start at age 4.

This is what 6 months of dedication looks like! ⏩👏
From November 2025 to May 2026, This little one has been putting in the work during their 1-hour weekly OT sessions utilizing hippotherapy, and the results speak for themselves! We are celebrating major clinical gains in:
✨ Postural control & stability
✨ Core strength
✨ Head and neck control
✨ Upper extremity strength
✨ Overall gross motor control
We love seeing how the dynamic movement of the horse can facilitate such beautiful functional progress. 🌟🐴

From the saddle to the treatment space—and into everyday life! 🐴✨

At Cultivate Rehab, the magic starts in the arena but it certainly doesn't end there. We use the dynamic, multidimensional movement of the horse as a powerful tool to build foundational motor skills, core strength, and coordination.

But the real goal? Independence.
We carefully bridge the gap between horseback and the clinic, taking the physical gains made during hippotherapy and translating them directly into functional, everyday tasks. Whether it’s improving posture for sitting at a desk, building the fine motor skills needed to button a shirt, or gaining the confidence to navigate the playground, we are here to support every step of the journey.

🐴 Why this approach works:
Engagement: The equine environment naturally motivates and challenges.
Sensory Input: The horse provides rhythmic, organized sensory feedback that helps regulate the nervous system.
Real-World Application: Skills built on horseback are immediately practiced and reinforced in our treatment space.

Yes!!

We have a crisis in early childhood — and it's hiding in plain sight.

Walk into almost any preschool classroom and you'll find it: children reciting colors, counting to 20, naming shapes, and rattling off letters. And adults beaming with pride.

But here's the question nobody's asking — do they actually know what any of it means?

And yet we've built entire assessments, report cards, and parent conversations around these performances, mistaking recitation for learning.

Rote drills activate the most surface level of cognition. They don't transfer. A child who can count to 100 may have zero number sense. A child who knows every letter name may still struggle to decode because phonemic awareness, as the real foundation was never developed.

Meanwhile, the experiences that actually wire the developing brain are being crowded out.

Connection builds the emotional safety that makes all learning possible — the foundation of every risk a child will ever take as a learner.

Nature and outdoor movement grow executive function, attention, and regulation, and give children's bodies what they were designed for. Running, climbing, jumping, and digging are not recess filler. They are brain development. You cannot skip the body and expect the mind to follow.

Sensory play builds the neural pathways that underpin reading, writing, and mathematical thinking.

Listening to children (truly, responsively listening) and genuine, reciprocal communication, builds vocabulary, narrative thinking, and the felt sense that their voice matters. When we talk at children instead of with them, we rob them of the interactions that grow language most powerfully.

The more of us who understand this, the brighter early childhood (and lifelong development) becomes. 🌱

The power of a horse's stride is unmatched! We are thrilled to share this incredible testimonial from one patient's parents about the progress that has been made by participating in occupational therapy utilizing hippotherapy.

By engaging the rhythmic movement of the horse, this amazing kiddo has shown significant measurable improvements in:
Gross Motor & Posture: Enhanced core strength and motor planning.
Fine Motor & Coordination: Precision and hand strength.
Cognitive & Visual Processing: Sustained attention and visual tracking.

Therapy doesn't always have to happen within four walls! 🐴
