Have you ever heard a song and it just takes you there?
That happened to me this week at a 6th-8th-grade school concert. They played Coldplay’s “Yellow,” “The Scientist,” and the Eagles’ “Take It Easy.”
✨ Immediately, I was back at our wedding, dancing our first dance to “Yellow.”
✨ Then I was back in Eastern Europe, remembering the moment I learned my dad had taken his life.
✨ The third song just happened to be my dad’s favorite song, “Take It Easy,” by the Eagles. My mom tapped me on the shoulder and whispered, “Your Dad’s FAV song!”
In my head, I thought, “Hi, Dad,” remembering him both in his death and in his joy in life. And right beside that ache was deep gratitude: my 79-year-old mama was sitting next to me, remembering with me.
Maybe it’s because I’m turning 49 this year and I’m more sentimental, or maybe I’m just appreciating how life will always serve us the ups, the downs, and the gentle reminders that we have really lived.
Life really is about the little things. The songs. The shoulder taps. The memories. The people still here to remember with us.
🎶 What song takes you back?

Nothing brings you into the present moment faster than the possibility of losing someone you love. A person. A pet. It doesn’t matter.

That’s the strange gift of death, it reminds us what’s precious right now.

Since our 120-pound boy turned 10, we’ve become deeply aware that every day with him is a gift. Today feels especially true.

He should be getting out of the ER today. 🤞🏼❤️

Mai’s father survived things most of us cannot imagine.
Torture.
Starvation.
Scars his children grew up touching.
A body that almost did not make it home.
And still, he taught them to look for the good.
Not in a naive way.
Not by excusing harm.
But by refusing to reduce any human being to a label.
Even after everything, he could still see the humanity in people.
That is not weakness.
That is what happens when pain does not harden you, it deepens you.

Some people have worn the warrior mask for so long that everyone forgets there is a human underneath it.
They have survived the thing.
Kept showing up.
Kept smiling.
Kept saying, “I’m fine,” until everyone believed them.
But even the strongest people need somewhere to fall apart.
Somewhere, they don’t have to be brave.
Somewhere they can collapse, breathe, be held, and be heard.
Check on the ones who always seem okay.
They may be carrying more than they ever say out loud.
You are not alone.
We are all more alike than we are different.

She Put Him in Jail. He Thanked Her.
Years after Mai stood in court as a teenager, where the man who r***d her was sentenced, she returned to that same courtroom as a judge.
This time, she was the one sentencing a man to jail.
And he thanked her.
Not because accountability disappeared.
Not because harm was excused.
Because even in that moment, he felt listened to.
That is the power of being seen, held, and heard.
It can change the way someone sees themselves.
It can plant a seed of responsibility.
It can offer hope where there may have been none.

When a child is violated, silence can become its own kind of prison. Being seen, held, and heard can become the first breath of freedom.

Mai’s story is about silence, survival, and the freedom that can come when the truth is finally witnessed.

When I met Mai, I was immediately drawn to her transparency, humility, humor, and the way she tells the truth without flinching.

Mai was twelve when a stranger turned her trust against her.

A man who looked safe.
A child taught to be kind.
A body that knew something was wrong before her mind could understand it.

Then came the silence.

The kind that lives in your throat, your gut, your body.
The kind that can make a child hold her breath for a year.

At fifteen, Mai stood in court and told the truth. Not because a verdict could fix everything, but because she needed to be seen, heard, and witnessed.

Years later, she became the first Vietnamese judge in Norway, in the same court where she put her ra**st away.

Full circle.

This episode is for you if you’ve ever:

✅Stayed silent because speaking felt impossible
✅Loved people who loved you but could not give you what you needed
✅Carried shame that was never yours to carry
Reached outside your family to find safety, truth, or support
✅Lived between two cultures

Mai reminds us:

✨Tell your truth.
✨Let yourself be witnessed.
✨Be like water.
✨No mud, no lotus.

When Mai was at her lowest, she knew isolation would only make the pain louder.
So she reached out.
Not because she was weak, but because some part of her knew she could not carry it alone.
And she was met.
That is wisdom.
That is survival.
That is not wasting your pain.
