October 12–16, we’re celebrating the amazing Montana school nutrition professionals who bring nutritious, delicious meals to students every school day!

This year’s theme, “The Show Starts at Lunch,” celebrates the creativity, teamwork, and dedication it takes to serve school meals daily 🌟

School lunches fuel learning, support healthy growth, introduce students to new foods, and bring school communities together 👏💚

Over the next three years, we’ll support Montana schools and students through culinary training, nutrition education, farm to school connections, local wellness initiatives, taste tests, and more. 🌱🍎👩‍🍳

This month’s Montana Harvest of The Month is Apples! Did you know that no apple seed will produce the same variety as the apple it came from? That means that every apple seed will grow a tree that will produce a brand-new type of apple! The only way to grow the same variety is by taking a branch from one tree and attaching it to the roots of another apple tree; this process is called grafting. 🌾🍎 Shout out to Hobson School is showing students where their food comes from! 🍎🌾

Check out this incredible “Look where our food comes from” board in the Hobson School lunchroom led by Devon Johnson, the School Food Service Director 🗺️

What a fun way to help students see the connection between Montana producers and their plates! 🥩🥕🍯🥚

Devon is serving up Montana foods including beef and local eggs to fresh produce, honey, pasta, dairy products, and more. See a sample of their inspiring menu!

MiShai served up all-local beef hamburgers with fresh fixings from the school garden, paired with hand-cut potatoes from a local producer. 🥔🍔

A Fresh Start to the School Year at Manhattan School District! 🍎

Manhattan School District # 3 is "spicing" up school meals this school year with a new condiment station that gives students more choices and the opportunity to customize their meals! 🧂🌿

New from-scratch recipes, including tater tot casserole, fresh tomato soup, and more have already been enjoyed this year! 🍲

The district’s continued efforts to enhance school meals were supported through training provided by the School Meals Support Program.

We’re excited to see these changes in action and look forward to a great—and delicious—school year ahead! 🥪🍽️

Wolf Creek school students enjoyed a culinary class making homemade bison tamale pie and blueberry cornbread! Something (the lack of leftovers) tells us these recipes are going to be added to their regular menu rotation! 🫐🍅

The kids also participated in Food Education class, learning about the food pyramid by creating their own 'pyramid silly faces' for snacks🌶️🥚🫛
