One of my favorite part about getting started with a client is the health history or intake appointment. It’s a special time because we get the chance to look at the story of my new clients life, together.
This is probably the most powerful aspect of the work that I do with clients. I learn about them, their life past and present, about whether they sat at the dinner table with ease or bracing, or if they liked school, and where they grew up.
We look at where they are in the birth order, the health of the parents, if they were born vaginally or C section.
And I ask questions, tracing a thread as it shows up - do they travel, or are they a homebody. Do they stay up to all hours of the night, or are they punctual in their sleep, etc.
It’s in this telling of the story, in this learning about them that the picture of the work together begins to appear. I begin to see the systems that are asking for support and as I have come to say, the first domino to flick in the line begins to show itself.
And this is fun for me. These first appointments are a treasure because we make connections together, and I hear what’s between the lines, what’s not being said. And in this way functional medicine nutrition and health coaching goes deeper, because a symptom may have brought them in the door, but their story holds the key to feeling better.
