Good morning ☀️

09/03/2026

One of my favorite part about getting started with a client is the health history or intake appointment. It’s a special time because we get the chance to look at the story of my new clients life, together.

This is probably the most powerful aspect of the work that I do with clients. I learn about them, their life past and present, about whether they sat at the dinner table with ease or bracing, or if they liked school, and where they grew up.

We look at where they are in the birth order, the health of the parents, if they were born vaginally or C section.

And I ask questions, tracing a thread as it shows up - do they travel, or are they a homebody. Do they stay up to all hours of the night, or are they punctual in their sleep, etc.

It’s in this telling of the story, in this learning about them that the picture of the work together begins to appear. I begin to see the systems that are asking for support and as I have come to say, the first domino to flick in the line begins to show itself.

And this is fun for me. These first appointments are a treasure because we make connections together, and I hear what’s between the lines, what’s not being said. And in this way functional medicine nutrition and health coaching goes deeper, because a symptom may have brought them in the door, but their story holds the key to feeling better.

August- why did you leave me so soon?

08/31/2026

Late August is bittersweet. The cool weather is coming, and I woke up this morning to 39 degrees. Brrr.

And I also think my zest for gardening is beginning to wane. It feels like a chapter is slowly closing. Now that my son is off at school, our meal needs are changing, and the volume of food that we grow is obviously less.

How I use my time is also shifting. While my son was growing, I would putter about in the yard, and gardening was an easy way to provide for my family and be at home for him. Now that he isn’t here, I’m using my time for other things like working, riding my horse, getting out on my bike, etc.

Another factor of the upcoming shift is the cost of water from our city has increased quite a bit. The water to keep my veggie garden growing is now more expensive than simply heading to the store to buy local carrots. Sad, but true.

For now, my garden is happy and I’m enjoying these last few weeks of yummy, fresh foods. And as soon as the plants are done, I plan to dismantle at least 2 raised beds to downsize.

I hadn’t seen this coming, so I’m tending to my heart in this transition, and rest in knowing that there are new things coming for me out there. I’m making space for it. And it feels good.

Head’s up - RANT ahead!

W**d through all the bulls$!t and don’t listen to all the tips, fear mongering, doubt causing things you hear from all the random people on the internet.

You are you, and there is no one else like you. Your story, your history, your body, your thoughts, your digestion, your immune system, your symptoms, your life.

You are unique. A one size fits all approach is not unique.

Find what works best for your body and supports your healing. Ignore the rest.

Rant over, until the next time…

I’m jumping on the kinda chic trend. It’s kinda chic to support women to improve digestion, improve energy and avoid emergency bathroom stops. health

Traveling gluten free can lead to some fun scavenger hunts. My son and I found two gems in Salt Lake City this weekend. CONTENTO CAFE • MEXICAN RESTAURANT was a delicious yummy find. Super quaint, with tiny plants, beautiful decor, smiling staff and a fully gluten free kitchen. We each had tacos. 🌮 so good, didn’t even get a photo. Hallowed Grounds Café & Gifts breakfast was amazing. All set in a funky restored old church with various businesses the vibe is chill. The dedicated gluten free kitchen churned out these yummy sandwiches and we enjoyed our coffees before we left for the airport. Yum 😋

Over the past year, I had the honor to sit in circle with a collection of women held by Katie at Ensō Natural Medicine .

I had signed up for the year of circles when I was at a crossroads, and felt a little “stuck” in navigating my way forward.

I was a recent empty nester with my son off to college, and it felt like I was left in a boat without a paddle. So the circles felt like the right next step.

I found quiet and ease within the circle, and a deep connection to the other women as we all shared our thoughts and feelings with one another.

These photos are from the circle alter at each gathering. May you find peace and connection today through these images and with those around you. 📷 Katie Cook-Bretson Registration for the next year of circles opens soon! Contact Ensō for details.
