Swipe for a month healed ♡ ✨
Medusa. The name alone conjures images of writhing snakes and a petrifying gaze. But her story goes far beyond a monster lurking in the shadows.
Originally, Medusa wasn't a terrifying Gorgon. Legend says she was a beautiful priestess of Athena. However, her fate took a dark turn when Poseidon, the god of the sea, assaulted her within Athena's sacred temple.
Enraged by this desecration, Athena didn't punish Poseidon. Instead, she turned her wrath upon Medusa, transforming her beautiful hair into venomous snakes and cursing her gaze to turn anyone who looked upon her face to stone.
So, why has this tragic figure become a symbol of abuse and survival for some?
Medusa's transformation can be seen as a metaphor for the victim-blaming often experienced by survivors of sexual assault. She was punished for an act committed against her, her agency stripped away, and she was forever marked and feared.
By reclaiming Medusa's image, survivors find a powerful symbol of resilience and righteous anger. Her monstrous appearance, once a mark of her curse, becomes a shield and a warning. It represents the pain and trauma inflicted upon them and the strength they found to survive.
Medusa's story, though rooted in ancient myth, continues to resonate today as a potent reminder of the devastating impact of abuse and the enduring spirit of those who overcome it.
