🌟 Staff Spotlight: Audrey Utter 🌟

At Ida’s House, our staff are the heart of everything we do. Their compassion, dedication, and commitment to our residents are what make our home so special.

This week, we are proud to recognize Audrey Utter as our Staff Spotlight Superstar! ⭐

When asked why she chose to work at Ida’s House, Audrey shared:

“I chose to come to Ida’s House not only because I feel a strong calling to help vulnerable individuals, but also because it’s incredibly rewarding to provide comfort, safety, and to be able to love and build connections with the residents. I feel a strong sense of empathy and compassion for people who are vulnerable and need help. Knowing that I am making a difference in their days is a feeling that is so fulfilling.”

Audrey’s words perfectly reflect the values we strive to uphold every day. Her kindness, empathy, and genuine love for our residents shine through in all that she does. We are incredibly grateful to have Audrey as part of the Ida’s House family.

Thank you, Audrey, for the difference you make in the lives of our residents each and every day. 💙

“Help me!”

Few things are more distressing for families and caregivers than hearing a loved one call out for help over and over again.

Our natural instinct is to immediately ask:

“What do you need?”

But sometimes the answer isn’t simple.

A person may repeatedly call out “Help me” even when they cannot explain what they need—or after their immediate needs have already been met.

What many people don’t realize is that “Help me” may be communicating:

💛 Fear
💛 Anxiety
💛 Loneliness
💛 Pain or discomfort
💛 Confusion
💛 Boredom
💛 A need for reassurance
💛 A need for human connection

The words may stay the same, but the reason behind them can be very different.

Instead of focusing only on stopping the calling out, it can help to ask:

• Are they uncomfortable?
• Are they frightened?
• Are they looking for someone?
• Do they need reassurance that they are safe?
• Have there been changes in routine, environment, or health?

At Ida’s House, we believe behaviors are often forms of communication.

Behind every repeated call for help is a person trying to express a need—even when they cannot find the words to explain it.

When we look beyond the behavior and respond to the emotion underneath, we often discover what truly matters most.

Sometimes the greatest comfort is not having all the answers.

Sometimes it is simply being present and helping someone feel safe.

Meet Maria! This weeks Superstar!

I have been an LNA since 2012 before becoming an LNA I took care of my Grandmother. It was then that I knew I wanted to make a difference. I provide the best care because if it was me I would want the same. There is no greater feeling coming into work and seeing the smiling faces of my patients and hearing them say “Hey, I know you!” I get to create a special bond with my patients and they know they can trust me. I enjoy getting to be a part of their day and getting to know each one of them. I will continue to do this until I am no longer physical able to because I absolutely love our seniors. I also feel like I am making a difference when I can teach others. It has been a dream of mine to be able to teach others about Alzheimer’s so that they can have a better understanding of what their loved one is going through.

I love taking care of people and putting a smile on their face. I am at Ida’s house because there is such a great need for a place to call home. Ida’s was a seedling that has been planted and I get to be part of it and we all get to watch it grow into something beautiful.

Thank you Maria for being apart of the Ida’s House Family!!!

🐾 The Healing Power of Animals 🐾

One of the many things that makes a house feel like a home is the presence of animals. At Ida’s House of Vermont, we see firsthand the joy, comfort, and connection that animals bring to our residents every day.

For many individuals living with dementia, animals can provide a sense of calm, reduce anxiety, spark treasured memories, and encourage meaningful interactions. A wagging tail, a gentle purr, or simply watching birds outside the window can bring smiles, laughter, and moments of peace.

Animals don’t judge, rush, or expect anything in return. They offer companionship, unconditional love, and comfort when words may be difficult to find. They help create opportunities for conversation, reminiscing, and social engagement while adding warmth and happiness to daily life.

The simple presence of animals reminds us that some of life’s greatest gifts come in the smallest moments—a gentle nuzzle, a shared smile, or a quiet moment of connection.

At Ida’s House of Vermont, we believe that exceptional care goes beyond meeting physical needs. It means nurturing the heart, mind, and spirit—and sometimes that comes with four legs and a furry face. ❤️

Dementia has nothing to do with intelligence.
One of the biggest misconceptions about dementia is that it means a person is no longer intelligent.
That simply isn't true.
Many people living with dementia were teachers, engineers, business owners, farmers, nurses, parents, military veterans, and community leaders. They spent decades building careers, solving problems, raising families, and sharing wisdom.
Dementia affects the brain's ability to process, store, and retrieve information.
It does not erase a person's value.
It does not erase their life experiences.
It does not erase who they are.
A person may struggle to find words but still understand emotion.
They may forget a name but remember how someone made them feel.
They may need help with daily tasks while still wanting respect, choice, purpose, and connection.
At Ida's House, we believe it is important to see the person beyond the diagnosis.
We focus on strengths, abilities, preferences, and what still brings meaning and joy.
Because a diagnosis does not define a person.
And cognitive changes should never be mistaken for a lack of intelligence.

🎶 Music is more than just entertainment at Ida’s House of Vermont—it is an important part of caring for our residents.

A familiar song can bring back treasured memories, spark conversations, encourage movement, and brighten someone’s entire day. For many seniors, especially those living with memory loss, music has a unique way of reaching the heart when words cannot.

Whether we’re enjoying a sing-along, listening to favorite classics, or simply tapping our feet to a familiar tune, music helps create joy, connection, and a sense of belonging.

At Ida’s House, we believe that every day should include moments that nourish the soul—and music does just that. ❤️🎵

Why are activities so important?
Sometimes families see activities like balloon toss, bowling, music, crafts, or group games and think, "That's nice."
But these activities are much more than entertainment.
They are opportunities for people to:
🎈 Stay physically active
🎈 Maintain mobility and coordination
🎈 Experience joy and laughter
🎈 Connect with others
🎈 Build confidence and purpose
🎈 Reduce loneliness and isolation
🎈 Stimulate the mind in meaningful ways

This week at Ida's House, we'll be enjoying activities like balloon toss and bowling.
While they may look simple, these activities encourage movement, social interaction, hand-eye coordination, and engagement—all important parts of overall wellness.
One of our goals is to focus on what people can still do, rather than what they have lost.
A smile during a game. A laugh with a friend. A successful toss of a balloon.
These moments matter.
At Ida's House, we believe meaningful engagement is an important part of quality care because every person deserves opportunities to experience connection, accomplishment, and joy.

Another beautiful morning filled with music from one of our residents. We gathered together and enjoyed songs that brought back memories of a much simpler time. Moments like these remind us how blessed we are to have the residents we do. It is truly an honor to share in their lives, their stories, and the memories that make each day so special. ❤️

Today was a very special day at Ida’s House! ❤️

We were lucky to have two wonderful visitors from Caring K-9s, Odin and Maple, spend time with our residents. Their gentle presence brought so many smiles, comfort, and joy throughout the home. 🐾

To make the day even more special, one of our talented residents shared his gift of music by playing his trumpet for everyone. It was such a meaningful moment filled with happiness, memories, and togetherness.

Days like today remind us that Ida’s House is more than just a care home — it’s a family and a community where moments of connection truly matter. 🎶
