🌿 A little plant chemistry happening right before my eyes…

I’ve been experimenting with avocado seed for the first time, and I had to document what happened.

As I grated the fresh avocado pit, it started out creamy white and quickly transformed into shades of orange and deep red as it was exposed to air. This is the result of enzymatic oxidation of the seed’s phenolic compounds, creating those beautiful red pigments.

For my second batch, I worked more quickly and added high-proof grain alcohol before as much color developed. The result was a much lighter extraction.

Now I have two side-by-side preparations:

❤️ Batch 1: avocado seed + vodka, with more time for oxidation before extraction
🌿 Batch 2: avocado seed + grain alcohol, added sooner to capture the seed before as much oxidation occurred

Eventually, I’ll combine them, but I’m keeping them separate for now so I can observe how they develop.

Avocado seed has a fascinating traditional history of topical use, particularly in preparations for the skin, and I’m curious to explore this plant more deeply through both traditional herbal knowledge and my own observations.

This is one of my favorite parts of herbalism: watching the plant tell you a little about itself. 🌱❤️

After making some avocado toast this morning for my family I looked at the pit and was like “today is the day!” 😂

I have been reading about the anti inflammatory benefits of avocado pits and have never tried tincturing one before. I started with a hammer thinking I would crack it like other pits I work with. That didn’t work out so well!! So I took out my rasper and that grated it perfectly!

Typically with water content in a fresh pit like this I would use grain alcohol to extract but only had organic vodka on hand so that’s what I used.

Look at the color of this immediately after adding the alcohol! I can’t wait to try it out in a few weeks. 😍
