Common question series time!

Paying for doula support:
Many are convinced that doula support is the right choice, but feel it’s not in the budget.

Let’s explore some options:
Missouri Medicaid now pays for doula support. Many doulas can accept this, myself included.

TRICARE military insurance now pays for doula support. I can accept this as well.

Many major employers, such as Walmart, now offer doula support as an employee benefit. Check with HR at your place of employment. Even if the answer is no, the interest will spark change.

Most doulas will accept payment on a payment plan. As you interview doulas, begin early in the pregnancy and ask for gradual payment options.

Friends and family may be willing to chip in, or loan the money and extend the payment timeline. “Doula funds” can be added on shower registries and wishlists. This option can be a good one if remote friends and family want to help.

If I am using a midwife, do I need a doula?

Simple answer: probably! Most of my midwife friends much prefer that their moms, ESPECIALLY first time moms, hire a doula. Here’s why!

Midwives are medical professionals. Your midwife’s job is to keep you and your baby medically safe. If your midwife is overly tired because she is providing the support a doula would provide, there is every chance she can become tired and less effective by the time you give birth and or/have an urgent medical need. Not the scenario we want.

Doulas are with you for continual support during labor (research proven to improve outcomes,) generally from the time you enter active labor and begin to work hard.

Midwives may join you later in the process. While midwives can do everything doulas can do, we want them focused on keeping you and your baby safe and healthy.

Doulas tend to your needs for comfort, position changes, coaching through labor, practical needs and emotional support. They also support your partner, where needed, and provide encouragement to them as well.

It is difficult to get both types of care from one person.
