Heading out for a busy weekend?

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently checked the menus of 12 major fast food chains for ultra-processed ingredients. Only ONE had none on its entire menu.

Why does that matter? Diets high in ultra-processed foods are linked to Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression and more. And with families getting almost a third of their calories from food made outside the home, those weekend drive-thru stops add up.

Most of us will still grab food on the go now and then, and that’s okay. A few simple choices make a real difference. Look for grilled, unbreaded protein with vegetables or a side salad. Go light on dressings and sauces, since some have more than 20 ingredients. And think twice about the specialty sodas: some pack over 100 grams of added sugar, about double the recommended daily limit. Water, black coffee or unsweetened iced tea are your best bets.

Weekend challenge: can you eat 30 different plants this week?

Why 30? The more variety of plant foods you eat, the more types of good bacteria your gut can support. A healthier, more diverse gut is linked to better appetite control, steadier blood sugar and a healthier weight.

What counts: every different fruit, vegetable, herb, spice, nut and seed. Each one counts once, no matter how many times you eat it. That sprinkle of cinnamon in your coffee? That counts. Basil on your eggs? Counts too.

Easy ways to add more: toss a handful of mixed nuts or seeds on a salad, add fresh herbs to anything, buy a vegetable you don’t usually pick up, or try a new spice.

This challenge comes from our latest newsletter, The 4-Prong Approach to Weight Loss: https://drmarieandersson.com/the-4-prong-approach-to-weight-loss/

Stuck and can’t lose weight?

You’re eating well. You’re exercising. You’ve cut back on sugar. And the scale still won’t move. Sound familiar?

It may not be willpower. In this month’s newsletter, Dr. Andersson shares the 4-Prong Approach she developed after seeing so many patients doing “all the right things” and still struggling. Diet and exercise are the foundation, but three other systems decide how your body responds: gut function, toxicity and hormonal balance.

You’ll also find a simple 8-week plan, a tracker to see which prong needs the most attention, and the story of a patient whose answer turned out to be in her house.

Sending thanks and gratitude to Dr. Andersson for taking the time to go to the MAPS Fall 2026 Clinician Conference in Philadelphia, hosted by Medical Academy of Pediatrics & Special Needs - MAPS. MAPS brings clinicians together to dig deeper into caring for children and adults with complex medical needs, including autism, and to keep learning better ways to help patients who don't fit a standard diagnosis or treatment plan. That's exactly the kind of training Dr. Andersson seeks out, and it means a lot to all of us here.

We appreciate everything you do for your patients, Dr. Andersson.

Take a look at the recap video below.

Thoughts about aging

Funny thing about life: when we're young we have thick skin physically but thin skin emotionally; as we age we develop thick skin emotionally but thin skin physically. It gives the illusion of strength in youth and weakness in old age, when in fact we tend to be more resilient and stronger the older we get.
We live in a culture where youth is revered and aging is abhorred.
So much money spent on hiding one's experience in life, instead of embracing the beauty of a long life.
What will people remember about you when you're gone? Will it be love and kindness, or something that has no real value?
Love lives on in perpetuity in our hearts, not how you looked or how much money you made, but rather the care and kindness that you bestowed upon others regardless of their station in life.
Aging has become a portrayal of a loss of competence, rather than the joy of knowledge and experience.
The failure of our society and culture to nourish and cherish the importance of self-care has led to nothing but profit for those who say self-care is not necessary, but rather a drug is more important than clean, healthy living.
Take care of yourself so you don't become that frail picture of age that has been portrayed to us since our youth.
Decline is not a predetermined destiny, but simply a compilation of choices made over a lifetime. Do you truly embark on self-care, or abdicate responsibility to what's convenient?
The true value of a life spent is not about what we accumulated, but rather how much grace and love we bestowed upon ourselves.
Remember, aging is inevitable but decline is not. When you see an older person, assume competence, not frailty, for someday, if you're lucky, it will be you.

— Dr. Marie

Bleach doesn't fix this, not the way you'd think. Duke University researchers sampling flooded buildings in Black Mountain found 65 different fungal species still active well after cleanup, standard bleach-based cleaning only reaches the surface, not what's rooted into drywall or wood underneath.

If Helene brought water into your home, car, or workplace, even if it looked fine afterward, it's worth having it checked. And if you've had lingering symptoms since, respiratory issues, fatigue, things that haven't quite added up, mold exposure can be part of that picture. We're always happy to talk through what you're experiencing.

Mycotoxins don't stay where the mold was.

This week's newsletter looks at where mycotoxins actually end up: HVAC systems that recirculate them through every room, water-damaged drywall and insulation that hold onto them long after a leak seems "dried out," even your car after a spill or a gym bag stored in a damp garage. Dr. Andersson also covers how mycotoxins affect the body, two specific toxins worth knowing by name, and how to actually test for mycotoxin illness.

Hormone imbalance isn’t always about age or stress. Sometimes it’s about what’s in your environment. 🧪

Atrazine, one of the most widely used agricultural herbicides in the US, revs up the enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen. Phthalates, found in plastics and fragranced products, directly suppress testosterone production at the source.

Neither is just passive exposure — both are active interference. You can’t avoid every chemical, but small, consistent swaps (skipping the microwave for plastic, choosing safer recycling codes, filtering your water) add up.

Curious how this connects to your own labs? Send us a message.

A simple hormone-supporting swap for your weekend 🥦

Add a side of broccoli, cauliflower, or Brussels sprouts to one meal this weekend. Cruciferous vegetables support healthy estrogen metabolism and give your liver a hand clearing hormones the way it's supposed to.

Small swap, real support. Have a wonderful weekend from all of us at Sage Wellness. 💚

Brain fog, fatigue, or low libido creeping in? It might be more than stress or aging.
In this week's newsletter, Dr. Andersson breaks down the signs of hormone imbalance in both women and men, what actually drives it beyond aging (stress, sleep, gut health, and more), and what the latest 2025 research says about modern, individualized hormone therapy.
