Postpartum mental health is more than the absence of mental illness, it also includes emotional, social, and functional well-being.
A new qualitative study in the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health explored postpartum mental health among people who experienced high-risk pregnancies complicated by hypertension or diabetes. Through in-depth interviews, participants described how strong relationships, family support, and supportive partners helped foster well-being during the postpartum period.
At the same time, challenges such as infant feeding difficulties, financial and housing insecurity, and ongoing health concerns created barriers to positive mental health. Participants also described a limited role of the perinatal care team in supporting mental well-being.
These findings underscore the importance of recognizing postpartum mental health as a distinct and essential component of maternal well-being , one that can be strengthened through supportive family networks and responsive health care systems.
