Most people get a TSH and maybe a T4 and are told their thyroid is fine. But that's only a fraction of the story. Here are 5 things a comprehensive thyroid workup should include that most doctors aren't checking.
1️⃣Free T3: This is your active thyroid hormone, converted primarily from T4 in the liver. It drives energy, metabolism, and brain function. You can have a normal TSH and low free T3 and feel terrible.
2️⃣Reverse T3: Think of this as the brake pedal of your thyroid. Stress, illness, and inflammation push your body to produce reverse T3 instead of the active hormone, effectively slowing everything down.
3️⃣Thyroid Antibodies: TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies reveal whether your immune system is attacking your own thyroid. This can happen years before thyroid labs ever go abnormal.
4️⃣Conversion Factors: Your body needs selenium, zinc, and iron to convert T4 into active T3. Without proper conversion, you won't have the energy your body needs regardless of what your labs show.
5️⃣Cortisol and Stress: Your stress hormones directly impact thyroid function. If cortisol is dysregulated, your thyroid won't function optimally no matter what your numbers say.
If you've been told you're normal but still feel exhausted, foggy, and off, a basic panel doesn't mean a complete picture. You deserve a full thyroid workup.
