🪖 What 750 soldiers just taught us about how chiropractic works. 🧑⚕️
Usually it's not "my pain went from a 6 to a 4." It's "I picked up my kid without thinking about it." Or "I finally made it through a full workday." Or "I played golf this weekend."
We've known for years that's where the magic happens. Now there's a study that measured it, in one of the toughest patient populations around.
What the researchers looked at:
This paper was published in PLOS ONE:

It builds on the big military trial you may already know, where adding chiropractic care to usual medical care beat usual medical care alone for active-duty service members with low back pain.
That trial answered does it work? This paper asks the next question: how does it work?
The team looked at 750 active-duty service members. Half got usual medical care. Half got usual medical care plus up to 12 chiropractic visits over 6 weeks. Everyone was followed to 12 weeks.
The numbers worth knowing:
✅ Chiropractic won on both outcomes. Adding chiro care improved pain interference by 2.82 points (PROMIS T-score) and pain intensity by 1.23 points on a 0–10 scale over usual care alone. The authors call that clinically important and moderate.
✅ 56% of the improvement in pain interference came through biopsychosocial gains. Your patients got better at living, and that drove much of the drop in how much pain disrupted their day.
✅ The top three pathways were physical function, social roles, and fatigue. Individually, social roles accounted for about 40% of the pain interference effect, physical function about 38%, and fatigue about 35%.
✅ This was not an easy crowd. Average age was about 31, roughly 77% male, and more than a third had been hurting for a year or longer. These are people whose jobs depend on their backs.
✅ It was real-world chiropractic. 72% of patients received a mix of hands-on and active care, which is what we actually deliver at DCG.
