Over the years I've learned that most people don't struggle because they lack answers.

They struggle because they're asking the wrong questions.

Someone wants to lose weight.

Someone wants to make more money.

Someone wants to grow a business.

Someone wants to bench press 315 pounds.

None of those goals are wrong.

But they're often only the beginning of the conversation.

One of the most important questions I've learned to ask is:

"How would achieving that improve the overall quality of your life?"

It's amazing what happens when people are given the space to look deeper.

Beneath the goal is often a desire for connection, purpose, confidence, belonging, love, freedom, or meaning.

The first answer is rarely the whole story.

Question for reflection:

What goal in your life might be pointing toward a deeper desire?

I think many of us have spent years trying to create a beautiful book cover for a book we haven't even written.

We're taught to focus on what people can see.

Our appearance.

Our achievements.

Our job title.

Our possessions.

Our image.

None of those things are inherently bad. But when they become the primary focus, we risk creating a life that looks impressive while feeling disconnected from what truly matters.

Over the years I've met people who achieved everything they thought they wanted only to discover they were still unfulfilled.

Not because they failed.

Because they spent all their energy perfecting the cover and very little time writing a story they genuinely wanted to live.

The goal isn't to ignore the cover.

The goal is to make sure the story inside is worth reading.

Question for reflection:

If your life were a book, would you be more focused on the cover or the story?

MICHELE'S HUG

Years ago, Michele walked into The Hub terrified.

She was uncomfortable in her own skin, and unsure if she even belonged in a gym.

Like many people, she believed her struggle was about weight.

Over time she began to lose weight, gain confidence, and trust herself in ways she never had before.

One day she came into the gym visibly emotional. When I asked what was going on, she shared something I'll never forget.

Her son had hugged her and said:

"Mommy, it's the first time I've been able to put my arms all the way around you."

That moment had nothing to do with a scale.

Nothing to do with calories.

Nothing to do with fitness.

It was about connection.

It was about participation.

It was about being fully present in her own life and relationships.

Over the years, I've learned that people rarely remember the number on the scale.

They remember the moments that become possible because they changed.

Question for reflection:

What part of your life are you longing to participate more fully in?

One of the most common themes I've encountered over the last 23 years is that people are carrying far more than they realize.

Some are carrying expectations placed on them by family.

Some are carrying old beliefs about who they're supposed to be.

Some are carrying the pressure to succeed, achieve, perform, or live up to an image that was never truly theirs.

What I've learned is that many people don't need more discipline, motivation, or willpower.

They're simply exhausted.

Exhausted from carrying things that no longer belong to them.

Real transformation often begins when we stop asking, "What do I need to add?" and start asking, "What can I finally put down?"

Sometimes the greatest act of courage isn't pushing harder.

Sometimes it's releasing what was never yours to carry in the first place.

Question for reflection:

What are you carrying today that may no longer belong in the next chapter of your life?

Over the last 23 years, I've had the privilege of walking alongside thousands of people as they've worked to improve their health, relationships, confidence, and overall quality of life.

One thing I've noticed time and time again is that many people arrive believing something is wrong with them.

They think they're not disciplined enough, motivated enough, successful enough, strong enough, or simply not enough.

What I've discovered is that most people are not broken.

More often than not, they're carrying expectations, stories, fears, and beliefs that were never truly theirs to begin with. They've spent years trying to become who they think they're supposed to be while losing touch with who they already are.

The most meaningful transformations I've witnessed haven't happened when someone fixed themselves.

They've happened when someone stopped treating themselves like a problem and started approaching themselves with curiosity, compassion, and honesty.

Maybe the next step isn't fixing yourself.

Maybe it's remembering that you matter.

Question for reflection: (Post your thoughts in the comments)

What would change in your life if you stopped believing something was wrong with you?

A man once came to The Hub with a very specific goal.

He wanted to bench press 315 pounds.

Like many goals, it sounded straightforward at first. But after 23 years of coaching, I've learned that the goal is rarely the goal.

As we talked, what emerged had very little to do with a barbell. What he really wanted was to be a role model for his sons and a husband his wife could be proud of.

This conversation taught me something I've seen repeated thousands of times over the years.

People often come to The Hub thinking they need to lose weight, get stronger, or improve their health. While those things matter, they're rarely the deepest reason they're seeking change.

Beneath most goals is a desire for connection, purpose, confidence, belonging, or a more meaningful life.

The goal is often just the doorway.

The real transformation begins when we're willing to ask what we're truly seeking.

Question for reflection:

What goal are you currently pursuing, and what deeper desire might be hiding underneath it?
