Adina: I think that the water 1-2 hours before medicine if fine and will prevent most cramping, even after a 12 hour fast. But you won’t necessarily throw up, and — please forgive me — a lot of the practitioners who want you to drink water before hand want you to throw up. It does not indicate anything about the medicine working deeper, it just gives the practitioner an end point: “I told you you would vomit and release bile, and you did. See how good the medicine was?” To me that is pretty much hogwash tomfoolery, but most people not only believe it, they look forward to it.
That was not what I experienced over the last 35 years of doing it with the Matsés, so it is not what I teach. I might be very wrong, of course, but medically I cannot see a reason a person would want to vomit up bile, a vital digestive juice. But that is just me.
