Running hasn’t always been a part of my life but it has slowly turned into who I’ve become (so far). No greater therapy, no greater effort, and no greater achievement (especially in terrible weather conditions) would have come from anything else. I know that running is not for everybody (and not everybody can physically run) but to see some of these influencers knock running but kind of shame the exercise all together was something I just couldn’t let go. ANY form of physical activity is a good one and while I do agree that strength and weight training, walking, swimming, running, etc all have their benefits, the BIGGEST predictor in weight loss is FOOD. You can lift until you’re blue in the face but if you’re superseding your calorie content for the day, you’re not getting anywhere fast. This is me: a 42 year old working mom who loves red meat, dark and stormy’s, and dessert every night. If I wanted to be at my optimal fitness goal, I would have to cut those things out-not put down the running shoes. So for my friends on social media, please try to take everything you read, see, and hear with a grain of salt (yes, even this post) because you’re a lot smarter than you think and when something seems ridiculous, it probably is.

Lots of docs and medical facilities get a bad rep for pushing pills and prescription drugs to help aide an illness or disease. While we try to be open-minded and reasonable in our office, the fact of the matter is that these drugs are needed to keep a person alive most often than not. I’m not talking about the common cold, I’m referring to the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, hypertension, gout, kidney failure, thyroiditis, and yes, even obesity. In reality, diet and exercise would most likely control or even cure these issues most times but the OTHER reality is that most people struggle to do this by themselves. You may not think so but your health and longevity is ALWAYS our top priority and if a patient can’t prove to help themselves, then we have to resort to the things that WILL. Because at the end of the day, these diseases can absolutely cause more problems that can lead to hospitalization and/or death in which case, you don’t leave us many alternatives. So while rubbing witch hazel on your body can help with irritation, rubbing it on your thyroid gland won’t help your endocrine system react appropriately. So a nice, “thanks for keeping me alive doc,” wouldn’t be the worst IMO. 🤨😉😃

As we approach summer, summer vacations are soon to follow and with that come the fabulous (and not so fabulous) things that come with it. Too often we have patients come in complaining of a stomach bug or food poisoning but it’s come to my attention that people are unaware of which is actually which so let’s divulge! Food poisoning is not usually transmissible and symptoms typically appear within a couple of hours of being exposed to said food. It usually only affects your gastrointestinal system and can be gone in as little as a day or just a couple of days. Food poisoning happens when a human ingests food that is covered in bacteria (think undercooked food, food that has been sitting out too long, and/or patrons who haven’t washed their hands whilst serving you. Ew.). Stomach bugs however, are quite contagious and can take a few days to rear its ugly head in a household. It is a virus that typically involves similar gastro issues followed by fever, fatigue, and severe dehydration. Stomach flus are famous for happening when you’re in close quarters with someone who has contracted it (I.e. cruise ships!). These viruses can last longer than food poisoning but more often than not, rest and hydration can fix both. However! If you have a fever that won’t go down, blood in your stool or urine, or you become incoherent, it’s time to see the doc!

Throw me a bone! I have lots of patients who have come from their recent bone density or dexa scan to go over their new diagnosis of either osteopenia or osteoporosis (unfortunately). Most of the time it affects women due to the lack or hormones that help support bone growth (thanks for everything menopause!) In short, osteoporosis is a “silent” disease that causes low bone mass and overall deterioration-it’s labeled as silent because people can’t see or feel it until they break a bone. Breaking down bones and replacing them is a normal bodily function until about age 35 when the breaking starts to outrace the growth. Most people assume it’s a calcium and vitamin D deficiency but it can stem from hormonal changes, having a petite body shape, excess smoking and alcohol intake, lack of physical activity, and/or steroidal medications. Overall, it’s important for patients to stay as healthy and physically active as possible to prevent this. Physical activity should include cardio but also strength or weight training as well, since this will help keep the muscles strong and supportive around the bones themselves. Just one more reason to take care of your body for as long as you can-you owe it to yourself ❤️

Wedding season!! I love going to weddings-mostly because it means a night out for mom and dad that involves dinner, drinks, and dancing! Most of the time, I tell patients to have a great time and not worry about the calories for the evening but if you have several events back to back in a short timespan, it may not be the worst idea to try to modify the evening to fit your needs and no better way to start than with cocktails!
A couple of ideas for low calorie/low sugar drinks are:
Tequila or vodka with club soda and lime, Diet Coke and rum, gin with club soda and a splash of grapefruit juice, Malibu rum (or any coconut rum) with club soda and a splash of pineapple juice, vanilla vodka and Diet Coke, and vodka with club soda and a splash of cranberry juice are just a few ideas to keep the diet steady but also keep the party going! Now get on that dance floor and get some extra steps in to celebrate the new couple (and your ability to be careful but still have a good time). Cheers!!

One of my favorite questions to answer is: where are my kidneys?! (I’m not kidding when I say this gets asked almost daily). First thing to know is that you actually have two kidneys (not one) and that they’re bean-sized and located on your lower back, sitting just below the rib cage. The next important thing to know is that your kidneys help to filter out your blood, eliminating waste and extra fluid for you to eventually urinate out. But not only does it balance your fluids, but it’s responsible for red blood cell production, maintaining your blood pressure, and keeping your bones strong! So you can imagine the importance of these organs staying nice and healthy. When a patient has kidney disease, it means it can no longer filter the blood correctly and that’s where infections and stones can develop, as well as the possibility of a kidney transplant or dialysis. People with diabetes or hypertension run a higher risk of this happening but the graph shows a general list of possible side effects to kidney issues in case you may be experiencing some unusual symptoms as of late. This is why it’s super important to take care of yourself through nutrition, maintain a healthy weight, and keep yourself hydrated-the goal is not for your body to work harder, only smarter 😉

Blood pressure! I think many patients get confused as to what’s a normal number and what’s diagnosed as high blood pressure or hypertension. First, it’s important to know what this actually is: this is the force of your blood pushing against your arterial walls. Every time your heart beats, blood pumps into these arteries. Your systolic pressure or your high number is when your heart is beating and pumping blood. Your diastolic pressure or your low number is when your heart is resting or in between the beats. Normal numbers are 120/80 (or lower). Elevated BP is between 120-129 with the low number under 80; stage 1 hypertension is between 130/139 and the bottom number is between 80-89; stage 2 hypertension is anything 140 or higher with the bottom number 90 or higher and finally, hypertensive crisis is when the high number is over 180 and the bottom is higher than 120. What does this all mean for health purposes? If your blood pressure is high, it signifies that your heart is working harder than it has to, pumping faster and elevating your risk of heart attack, stroke, or even kidney failure. Medication can help bring these numbers down but you can do your part by keeping a lifestyle that includes a healthy weight, diet, and exercise regimen. It’s also important to stay on top of your doctor visits and if you have a concern about your blood pressure please make sure to contact your healthcare professional asap! Your heart is your engine-make sure you fill it with the right oil and treat it with the respect it deserves.

A topic I don’t like to cover but that’s because I’ve actually suffered from some of these (and still continue a small struggle with one currently). As the saying goes, if you’ve never experienced something, you can’t truly know how it feels to go through that something-and this certainly holds true here. To date, there are actually several different eating disorders but the most common are: anorexia nervosa, bulimia, avoidant food disorder, and binge eating. These disorders are serious mental health issues that involve severe thoughts about food and the eating behaviors that come with it. Many people who suffer from anxiety and/or obsessive compulsive disorder seem to possess the ability to be at a higher risk than others but eating disorders do not discriminate. Some signs to look for if you’re concerned for a friend or family member (or even yourself) include fear of eating in public, poor body image, skipping meals, excessive exercising, programmed eating rituals, and the use of laxatives frequently to name a few. If you are concerned for yourself or a loved one, please do not hesitate to contact your healthcare professional or even just someone you feel comfortable speaking with on a daily! But please do so because getting help early can make all the difference ❤️

One of the most common diagnoses with the weakest research ever! As someone who suffers from IBS personally, nothing is more frustrating and embarrassing than having something you can’t really control. In some ways, IBS has dictated certain events and prevented me from doing certain things due to fear that I would have an “episode” and not be able to find a bathroom. All is not lost though-there are certain OTC medications that can help as well as certain foods and drinks you can avoid to help, all as a mindful and preventative approach. The last thing you want to do is be so afraid of IBS that you forget how to live so if you think you may have some, any, or all of these symptoms, please reach out to your healthcare professional for more guidance on how you can live with this because the good news is: YOU CAN.

Bodybuilding and supplements…is it really helping? Studies show that supplements that include zinc, magnesium, nitric oxide, quercetin, L-arginine, glutamine, or choline show no significant evidence that they improve athletic performance. Creatine (the comeback kid) has actually shown some improvement in muscle-building and can aide in the production of amino acids but studies show that long-term use could damage your liver or kidneys. Creatine has also been linked to an increased risk of something called compartment syndrome, a condition where pressure can build up in the muscle compartment and can actually prevent blood flow. Please make sure to have your levels checked often while you’re taking it and once you’ve achieved your desired effect, please consider coming off of it. As with most supplements, they all have a shelf-life on your body and should be taken gently, not abused. Eat right, stay consistent, and let your body do what it needs to do-it won’t let you down!
