Friends, I spoke about this in my stories last night, but wanted to do a hard post, because I think it’s important. I think it’s important for us to move together in community with others, hopefully gain some much needed feel-good endorphins, and know that our contribution will go to an extremely necessary cause. I love that .nyc is matching class proceeds to donate to . I’m matching and donating my pay and I’ve also received some Venmo contributions from friends who can’t attend class that will be combined for the cause. I have so many friends asking what they can do and my first answer is that there is a lot of long-term work that needs to be done and a continuous effort made. What you can do in the meantime is support causes that have needed support for awhile and this is one of them. Come to this LIVE Zoom class on Saturday at 11:30am EST to workout with me!! This class will of course be safe for all of my pre and postnatal mamas, but will be a great, sweaty, mindful class that we all need right now. Share this post, invite your friends and know the whole family can do it with you. The more make this work spread throughout our homes, the more work we do with our children, the further we will get. 🖤

Sending love to everyone during these difficult times. Expectant parents are being hit especially hard as several NYC hospitals have begun restricting support partners (co-parents, spouses, doulas) from the hospitals during birth. and are giving a free webinar tonight on navigating these new restrictions.
With Abundant gratitude for all the medical, birth and essential workers.

・・・
Welcoming your baby soon? Join us tonight for a discussion in light of recent news that hospitals are beginning to restrict partners (husbands, wives, co-parents, doulas etc) from labor and delivery and postpartum visits.

We will give you our best advice for laboring solo and give partner’s advice for supporting someone virtually. We’ll discuss the realities of “laboring at home as long as possible” and also walk you through how you might utilize a doula for support. LINK IN BIO!

This session is advised for folks due before April 30th.

The New Parent Support Group is a wonderful offering from and .bk, also . New series begins soon!

Somehow I think this drawing captures so much of the feeling of the beginning of parenthood. Out of time. Alone and yet not. Full of love and so very tired. Needing connection with others going through the same transformation. Wondering if they are out there in the night. . . . .
The next new parent support group sessions start 3/31 and 4/1 .bk. Sign up at their respective websites. Tell your new parent friends or yourself to go sign up.

Bravo ❤️ I’m seeing the same with many moms that I meet. Non-existent or mild yet quite functional diastasis recti diagnosed as very severe being told to wear a brace, stop moving, stop carrying their babies. The emotional toll is profound and very real during an already challenging time. ALL postpartum women will benefit from at least one appointment with a women’s health physical therapist (one that is up on the current research!) and ALL postpartum women will benefit from a progressive, graded return to exercise! rachel_parrotta_dpt Rachel Parrotta

Diastasis Recti, Fear and the Selling of Diastasis Programs.
This week, I saw a client who was told she has a 6-8 finger wide diastasis. She has never been pregnant and is seemingly very fit.

I measured a space of less than 1 finger in between her re**us muscles. A local colleague was able to use real-time ultrasound to measure a space of .59cm.

The amount of psychological distress that the client was describing was heartbreaking and maddening to me.
Since being told that she has the ‘6-8 finger’ diastasis, she has seen 3 physicians and 2 PT’s. And even though everyone is in agreement that the separation is actually insignificant, that first encounter has made it hard for the client to believe that nothing is wrong with her body.

There is so much that can be said about this. I have been trying to be measured in my response.

So for now, I will say this: If you are told that something is wrong with your body, and then you are sold a program to ‘fix it’, please try to find a second opinion.

Most people that I see for suspected Diastasis Recti need only 1 PT visit and guidance on progressive exercise. They do not need splints, movement restrictions or special programs. They need to load and strengthen their abdominal wall in a way that makes sense for the current state of their body.

Diastasis can be a real challenge for some and strengthening takes real work. But let’s stop diagnosing something that is not there. Be wary of people and programs that profit off of the message that your body is broken.

You are not broken. Your body is capable of amazing things.

It’s cold out there! Staying hydrated is still super important. Drinking water is important for your postnatal recovery, brain function, cellular regeneration and the list goes on and on. Confession: I don’t enjoy drinking water, but there are so many ways to make it more palatable. Make it fun by adding some lemon, lime, mint or a dash of fruit juice you enjoy. Warm caffeine-free teas count too! Get a high quality stainless steel bottle that you are more likely to carry with you. Hope that helps!

This message is so important. You can do or believe you are doing everything ‘right’ and still get an outcome you didn’t expect. This applies to EVERY aspect of life. My path to motherhood was HARD. Years of infertility, a tough pregnancy, birth trauma and a complex recovery left me deeply confused... but wasn’t I so ‘healthy’? So strong?
The health, wellness & fitness space requires a lot more empathy, listening & troubleshooting vs. outright promises of prevention and ‘fixes’. At the end of the day we are all just managing risks and doing the best we can.

We all know there are wonderful benefits to exercise, we don’t need to be told that again... WE KNOW. ⁣

What we do need more reminders of is that the journey of pregnancy, birth, & postpartum recovery will look different for everyone. That sometimes things are textbook & sometimes things have a way of blindsiding you. ⁣

This isn’t a post to discourage exercise & fitness during pregnancy, but rather to take a moment to pause & consider the whole picture & the lack of predictability that sometimes goes along with pregnancy, birth, & postpartum. ⁣

If you have been taken by surprise postpartum of how weak you feel, how long it’s taken you to feel like yourself, or how tasks that used to seem simple (even with a pregnant belly) now seem challenging, know you’re not alone in those experiences. That’s a fact. Keep moving forward day by day. You’re doing a great job. That’s also a fact.
