🦴 A Colles fracture is a distal radius fracture that typically occurs after a fall onto an outstretched hand. It is characterized by dorsal displacement and angulation of the distal fragment, producing the classic “dinner fork” deformity. It is most common in older adults with osteoporosis and is readily identified on wrist X-rays.

Radiology is made up of many different specialties, each with its own focus and purpose. In part two of this series, we’re exploring fields that impact patients in very personal and powerful ways. Pediatric radiology helps care for our youngest patients with imaging tailored to their growing bodies. Breast imaging plays a key role in early cancer detection and ongoing care. Cardiothoracic radiology focuses on the heart and lungs, often finding life-threatening conditions in time to act. Body imaging looks inside the abdomen and pelvis to detect disease and guide treatment. And nuclear medicine takes it a step further by showing how organs and tissues are functioning at the cellular level. Each of these fields helps answer critical questions in medicine and ensures patients receive the right care at the right time.

🎯 Carcinoid Tumor on CT showing Classic Mesenteric Mass

This hyperenhancing, calcified mesenteric mass with radiating strands is a hallmark of a carcinoid tumor

🩺 Key symptoms include flushing, diarrhea, bronchospasm, bowel obstruction, and RHF
🧪 Diagnosis involves CT or MRI, elevated 5-HIAA levels, and somatostatin receptor imaging
🛠️ Treatment includes surgical resection, somatostatin analogs like octreotide, and targeted therapies in advanced cases

⚠️ Fibrosis from the tumor can cause bowel ischemia, which is a serious complication.
