Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day and Emancipation Day in many communities, it is the largest and most widespread emancipation celebration in the United States. Muharram, the Islamic New Year, begins tonight with the sighting of the new moon. Marking the start of the first month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims around the world gather with their families for the holiday, as well as pray at mosques. Many also use this time for reflection on the past year and to set intentions for the year ahead. To all who observe Muharram, we wish you a blessed and peaceful New Year!
