Mammography can detect different types of breast abnormalities, including findings that may not be felt during a physical examination.

Myth: You only need a mammogram after 40 if you have a family history of breast cancer.
Myth: If you feel a lump, you can just wait for your next mammogram.
Myth: Breast pain always means breast cancer.

Breast pain is often caused by cystic changes or hormonal fluctuations, not cancer. And changes like ni**le inversion should always be evaluated, even after a normal mammogram.

Dense breast tissue can make small breast cancers harder to see on a mammogram because both dense tissue and many cancers appear white.

Screening breast ultrasound can be a helpful supplemental tool for women with dense breasts, allowing us to look more closely through the breast tissue and potentially identify findings that may not be visible on mammography.

Ultrasound does not replace your mammogram—it may be recommended in addition to mammography depending on your breast density and individual risk factors.
