Ujjai Breath is an easy breathing technique that lengthens your inhale and exhale, and gently massages the vagus nerve. Regular practice can bring a sense of calm and ease.
Jai means Victorious (Jaya in Sanskrit, Jai in Hindi). It is the Victorious Breath, or also known as the Ocean Wave Breath (as it mimics the sound of the ocean).
We use Ujjai Breath in yoga classes to help us through challenging sensations in yoga postures, and to assist in meditation.
Sit comfortably. Begin taking deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
Now, start to exhale like you are trying to fog up a mirror.
Continue this, noticing the constriction you are creating in the back of your throat.
Halfway through your next exhale, close your mouth, but continue to exhale like you are fogging up the mirror.
Now you are breathing only through your nose, in and out like you are still fogging a mirror. Hear the gentle sound of the breath at the back of the throat, like an “Ocean-Wave.”
Try to keep the constriction in the back of your throat as you breathe.
Allow your inhales to be long and deep. Bring the breath into the lower belly. Allow your exhales to be nice and long.
You can do this for 5 breaths or 5 minutes.
