The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

We wanted this to be a surprise, but we just can't stand keeping it a secret any longer! Our special Saturday night offering at this year's herbal conference will be an Herbal Dreaming Pajama Party with Joanna Mann! After dinner, we'll change into our PJs, get cozy around the grand fireplace, and learn about dream incubation, dream herbs, and the magic of dreaming as a community. We'll sip a special dream tea together, enjoy some drumming, and say goodnight by candlelight. The following morning we'll share dreams and insights over breakfast. We can't wait!

Rudbeckia triloba also known as Brown Eyed Susan. A quite hardy drought tolerant plant, native to the US, that brings joy and the first shades of fall to the late summer garden, roadsides, woodlines & thickets. Part of the seasonal explosion of yellow flowers happening now in my neck of the woods.

Beloved by a specialist bee called Andrena rudbeckiae, a native mining bee that depends strictly on Rudbeckia and Ratibida pollen, among many other important native pollinators and insects. (And humans!)

From an entry in, Native American Medicinal Plants; An Ethnobotanical Dictionary: The ground up petals or roots were brewed into teas or soups. They served as a general body tonic, a diuretic to encourage fluid release with edema, and a treatment for children with intestinal worms. Infusions of the plant were applied topically as a wash to soothe snakebites, burns, swelling, and open sores. A liquid tincture or sap extracted from the roots was traditionally dropped into the ear to relieve stubborn earaches.

While not widely partnered with in modern herbal medicine, I will sometimes work with Rudbeckias as a warmer alternative to Echinacea when it’s right for the person I’m working with.

Mostly, I just like to watch and admire them!

Always a good reminder!

Don’t forget to PRACTICE your herbal medicine!

This is a reminder to go beyond the books and the studies. Being with plants still in the ground, observing them, through to the processing, medicine making, and internalizing. Spend in-person time with our trailblazing teachers who are still with us. Talk to other herbalists and share ideas, failed experiments, ah-ha moments…listen.

This is the work. This is how we broaden our own wisdom, protect existing knowledge for future generations, and reinforce the web of our communities (human and non-human). The books and courses are necessary, but I believe the deepest growth comes with practice.

This is a reminder for me as well as you. 💚🌿
