We are aware of the recent Buffalo News article about another local organization with a similar name to UBNS (UB Neurosurgery). Due to the influx of inquiries and potential confusion, we wanted to let our patients, referring providers, hospital partners, and the Western New York community know that the article is not related to UBNS (UB Neurosurgery). UBNS (UB Neurosurgery) is not the organization being discussed in the article. UBNS (UB Neurosurgery) operations remain separate and independent from the organization being mentioned.

Brain Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that innovation in neurosurgery can change not only outcomes, but the patient experience itself.

At UBNS, Hanna N. Algattas, MD specializes in expanded endonasal surgery: a minimally invasive technique that allows certain brain and skull base tumors to be removed through the nose, avoiding traditional open skull surgery in select cases.

UBNS is the only practice in Western and Upstate New York offering true expanded endonasal surgery, bringing highly specialized care closer to home for patients across the region.

Learn more about Dr. Algattas and surgery in the link below.

May is Stroke Awareness Month and this week is National Women's Health Week, so Dr. Rosalind Lai is sharing the stroke statistics every woman should know.

Nearly 1 in 5 women will die from stroke, according to the American Heart Association, making it one of the leading causes of death in women and a major driver of long-term disability, including cognitive decline and post-stroke depression.

Congratulations to Tom Zervos, MD, of UBNS, and Lin Zhang, PhD, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University at Buffalo, have been awarded an NIH R21 grant!

This grant will enable them to investigate a novel wearable ultrasound patch for monitoring neonates with germinal matrix hemorrhage.

The technology will leverage to improve and automate diagnostic studies used to monitor this vulnerable population and guide treatment decisions.

The project will also evaluate the feasibility of advanced modalities, including shear-wave elastography, cerebral blood flow assessment, and integrated pressure sensing.

This showcases the innovation that is made possible through our close partnership with the University at Buffalo

May is National Stroke Awareness Month

Cerebrovascular disease includes conditions like stroke, aneurysms, and narrowed or blocked blood vessels in the brain. These are complex, time-sensitive conditions where expertise matters.

What many people don’t realize is that Buffalo has played a defining role in how these conditions are treated today. 🦬🧠

The work led by the late Dr. L. Nelson “Nick” Hopkins helped introduce minimally invasive, catheter-based approaches that changed outcomes for patients around the world

That foundation continues through our neuroendovascular team at UBNS, where thousands of patients are treated each year locally (and even more on a global scale) using both advanced endovascular techniques and open surgical approaches when needed.

If you or someone you love is navigating a cerebrovascular condition, you don’t have to leave Western New York to find world-class care.
