Please join us in welcoming Andrew D. Legarreta, MD, to UB Neurosurgery!

A Buffalo native returning home, Dr. Legarreta specializes in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery, with additional clinical interests in sports medicine and neurotrauma.

His academic and research work also sits at the intersection of neurosurgery and technology, including:

• Machine learning and AI-assisted spine diagnostics
• Intraoperative digital health technologies
• Predictive modeling for surgical care
• Advanced spine imaging and segmentation

Dr. Legarreta completed his neurosurgical residency at UPMC, along with specialized fellowship training in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery, sports medicine and AO Spine.

He has co-authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and 35+ scientific abstracts and presentations.

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Legarreta back to Buffalo and to the UBNS team.

When cancer spreads to the spine, deciding how to treat it is rarely simple. Surgery, radiation, and other options each carry trade-offs.

A new chapter co-authored by UB Neurosurgery's Dr. John Pollina and Dr. Jeffrey Mullin looks at the scoring systems doctors use to guide those decisions.

These tools weigh factors like the type of tumor, the stability of the spine, and a patient's overall health to help build a treatment plan tailored to each person.

The chapter appears in Spine and Spinal Cord Tumors (Thieme, 2025), a new textbook on classifying and managing these complex tumors.
