The Ebola outbreak continues to unfold in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Jericho Road’s Wellness Clinic in Goma remains open, delivering an average of nearly seven babies per day and providing high-quality primary care. Our local staff, led by clinic director Chantal Mandro, are seeing a large influx of patients and preparing for many more — including setting up an Ebola containment center in the city.
Goma has faced enormous challenges: the city has been under rebel control since war broke out early last year, the banking system remains shut down, and more than 800,000 displaced people are sheltering in tent camps — making it fertile ground for infectious disease.
Thanks to supporters like you, we have implemented strict screening and hygiene protocols. Every person who enters is tested for fever and symptoms, and those who recently traveled to the outbreak epicenter in neighboring Ituri province are separated. Suspected Ebola cases are immediately transferred to the local hospital.
Through our partnership with Direct Relief, we are receiving critical supplies to battle this disease: coveralls, respirators, goggles, antibiotics, IV fluids, oral rehydration salts, diagnostics, and chronic disease medications.
“Global health is local health — when systems collapse abroad, the ripple effects reach all of us. The people of Goma are our neighbors, too,” said CEO Dr. Allana Krolikowski, who was recently featured on WGRZ, WBEN, and WBKW discussing our response.
