Today, Buffalo EMS gives a heartfelt thank you the EMTs who continue to serve our community every day. Among our team are familiar faces who have dedicated years of service to Johnson County, alongside newer providers who have grown within Buffalo EMS through the guidance and education of our training program.

Our EMTs bring skill, professionalism, and compassion to some of the most critical moments in a person’s life. Whether responding to 911 emergencies, providing standby coverage at rodeos and high school events, or arriving first on scene during accidents and medical emergencies, they are always prepared to answer the call. They serve through sleepless nights, pandemics, blizzards, and extreme heat. Many have another career to show up for come the morning. Their dedication, resilience, and commitment help keep Johnson County safe each and every day.

Buffalo EMS honors our EMTs for the care, sacrifice, and professionalism they bring to this service. We honor and thank you not only during EMS Week, but every day of the year.

Today, we recognize the leadership that serves the after hours at Buffalo EMS. When the day ends and the overnight calls begin, our service relies on dedicated shift leaders who commit to full weeks of nights and weekends to coordinate crews, support operational safety, and lead by example—often while remaining on call from home.

These individuals provide the steady leadership our providers depend on during challenging hours and unpredictable situations. Whether offering guidance in the middle of the night, assisting crews during high-stress calls, or ensuring resources are in place to effectively serve the community, they play a vital role in maintaining the strength and reliability of Buffalo EMS.

Buffalo EMS extends its sincere gratitude to our shift leaders: Willie Barnum, Kelly Buckingham, Bonnie Swett , and Dennis Thorson for their continued dedication to serving Johnson County and supporting the crews who answer the call every day and night.

Today is dedicated to professional development and continuing education in emergency medical services. Across every community, Americans rely on a sufficient, stable, and highly trained workforce of first responders to provide care when it is needed most. Starting in the 1950s, the transport of injured patients became the responsibility of trained medical professionals. By the 1970s, a national framework was established to standardize the education and competencies required for EMS clinicians. That framework continues to evolve today, reflecting advances in medicine, technology, and the changing needs of the public. Supporting this system requires dedicated EMS educators at every level of licensure.

At Buffalo EMS, we are proud to recognize our educator, Stormy Fanning , RN. Stormy has strengthened the standard of care within our service by leading continuing education initiatives, instructing semester-long EMT certification courses, and advancing higher-level training to support the development of future advanced life support capabilities. Over the past three years, she has served as a cornerstone of our education program. She identifies knowledge gaps, ensures EMTs meet and exceed national competency standards, and develops realistic simulation-based training to better prepare providers for field operations.
Buffalo EMS extends its sincere appreciation to Stormy Fanning for her dedication, leadership, and lasting impact she has had on our providers and the patients we serve.

As we begin EMS Week, we recognize the importance of health, wellness, and resilience among EMS professionals. Across the country, EMS clinicians experience depression at twice the rate of the general population and PTSD at three times the rate. Addressing the mental and emotional impact of emergency medicine requires strong support systems, healthy coping strategies, and a commitment to overall wellness.
In recognition of these values, Buffalo EMS is proud to honor Kelly Buckingham. Kelly exemplifies the strength, compassion, and unity essential to serving in EMS during difficult calls and high-stress situations. She is consistently among the first to check on her coworkers, even while processing the effects of traumatic incidents herself. Through her leadership and support, Kelly encourages others to utilize mental health resources, seek peer to peer support, and strengthen the sense of connection and teamwork that defines Buffalo EMS.
Thank you, Kelly, for your leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of your team and community. Buffalo EMS is stronger because of you.
