Most people spend about 20 minutes at the grocery store. For families with allergies, it's often a completely different experience. 🛒

According to FARE’s (Food Allergy Research & Education) consumer research study, 71% of food allergy consumers spend an average of 3–5 minutes reading the label of every item before it goes into their cart.

What is a typical grocery trip for most is often a process of constant double-checking, comparing ingredients, and making sure nothing is missed for others.

At LA Food Allergy Institute, we recognize this daily reality and are committed to supporting families make safe, clear, and manageable food decisions.

During summertime sun exposure is natural, whether that՛s time at the beach, outside with your friends, or traveling. ☀️

However, for some individuals, sunlight can trigger more than warmth or tanning.
Sun-induced dermatitis, also known as photosensitivity, is a condition in which the skin reacts abnormally to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Symptoms may include redness, itching, small bumps, or hives, typically appearing on sun-exposed areas of the skin.

Understanding how the skin responds to sun exposure is an important part of prevention and seasonal health.

Summer adventures should be fun, not stressful. 🌞

Whether your child is heading to camp, a sleepover, or spending time with family, make sure the adults around them understand their food allergies, know the warning signs of a reaction, and are prepared to act if needed.

A little preparation can make a big difference. 💙

Learn about different types of wheat reactions.

🌾Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the small intestine is greatly affected by gluten consumption.

🌾 A wheat allergy is an immune response that can range from mild symptoms to anaphylaxis.

🌾 Non-celiac gluten sensitivity isn’t autoimmune or allergic, but can still cause symptoms like bloating and fatigue.

Three conditions, three mechanisms, and three different treatment paths- getting the right diagnosis is key to getting the right treatment.

Today is World Oceans Day - a reminder of how closely food, health, and our environment are connected.

Seafood remains one of the most common adult-onset food allergens, and reactions can sometimes appear unexpectedly, even after years of consuming these foods without concern.

As summer dining, travel, and seafood consumption increase, awareness becomes especially important.

Understanding allergies begins with mindfulness, and informed choices help create safer and more confident experiences with food.

Sauces, dressings, and condiments can contain hidden allergens—and shared serving utensils may increase the risk of cross-contamination.

Always check before adding extra flavor✔️🥗🍽️

In 2023, sesame officially became the 9th major allergen recognized in the United States - joining peanut, tree nuts, milk, egg, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish on required food labels.

For allergy families, that update matters every time you read a package. Labels are getting more specific, but they're also getting more complex. Knowing exactly which allergens affect you or your child - confirmed through proper testing - is more important than ever.

If sesame is a concern you haven't had evaluated, it's worth a conversation.

Allergens aren’t always listed by their common names, and ingredients can change without notice.
Read every label, every time. ✔️📋

Xolair has been part of allergy treatment for years. Now, it's specifically redefining what is possible for patients.

The FDA recently approved Xolair as a standalone therapy for food allergies — a significant milestone. When used alongside OIT, clinical trials show it helps patients build tolerance faster and with fewer adverse reactions, including those managing multiple food allergies or higher levels of sensitivity.

It works by blocking the IgE antibodies responsible for triggering allergic reactions — reducing the immune system's ability to overreact during treatment.

It's one of the most meaningful advances in this field in recent years, and we're proud to offer it.

If you'd like to learn more about Xolair in combination with OIT, you can reach out to our office to schedule a consultation.

Is it an allergy, an autoimmune disease, or something else?

When it comes to wheat and gluten, the terms often get blurred—but the science behind them is very different.

Here is the breakdown:

🌾 Wheat Allergy (Immune/IgE):
A classic food allergy. The immune system reacts to proteins in wheat, potentially causing hives, swelling, or even anaphylaxis within minutes. It’s a reaction to wheat proteins, not only gluten.

🛡️ Celiac Disease (Autoimmune):
Not an allergy. Gluten triggers an autoimmune response that damages the lining of the small intestine. Even small amounts of cross-contamination can cause internal injury, whether symptoms are noticeable or not.

☁️ Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (Clinical Condition):
People experience real symptoms such as bloating, fatigue, or “brain fog” after eating gluten, without the autoimmune damage seen in celiac disease or the IgE markers of wheat allergy.

Knowing exactly what is happening in your body is the first step toward the right plan. Don’t guess—get the data.
