Doctor to Doctor: A Warrior in White: Patient and Practitioner"

This session was truly extraordinary. Listening to doctors who are warriors themselves, living firsthand with sickle cell disease, offered a level of insight and connection that is rare and powerful.

These incredible practitioners shared what it is like to navigate a field where they, too, have experienced feeling unheard, learning not only how to fiercely advocate for themselves, but how to channel that strength to advocate for other patients. Their personal stories of perseverance, triumph, strength, and resilience, from their journey as medical students to becoming doctors while managing sickle cell, served as a deeply inspiring reminder that you are fully capable of achieving your goals.

We were honored to be joined in person by Dr. Cage Johnson, Dr. Oladipo Cole, and Dr. Lewis Thomas, who shared their wisdom and lived experiences with us. 💙❤️

Jason leads statewide outreach, coalition-building, and advocacy for California’s sickle cell community at Cayenne Wellness Center and Children’s Foundation. Rooted in his Salvadoran heritage and lived experience, he brings a bilingual, bicultural perspective and a commitment to ensuring warriors and their families are heard, supported, and never left to advocate alone.

Kickstarting the weekend with pure gratitude! ✨ The Benefit Concert & Awards Night was absolute magic. From the live music, great food, and hitting the dance floor to honoring our awardees and paying tribute to Kiki Shepard, it was a celebration to remember! Round of applause for our incredible MC, Ramon Reed, for keeping the energy high all night long. We are so grateful to everyone who showed up and brought the vibes.

Here’s what Wellness Day at the Summit actually looked like...

From exploring holistic health practices and raising awareness for Sickle Cell Trait to discussing the future of Gene Therapy, every moment was full of insight. We also took a meaningful pause for a Celebration of Life to honor the warriors who came before us, carrying their legacies in our hearts.

We ended the day on a lighthearted note with game night, wrapping up with plenty of smiles and connection.

As the voices joined together to sing “Lean on Me,” we held each other a little closer and lifted up the beautiful souls we’ve lost to Sickle Cell Disease. The Celebration of Life ceremony at was a deeply loving reminder that no one walks this journey alone. Though they are no longer by our side, their light, their smiles, and their spirit are forever woven into our community, and their stories fuel our fight for a better future.
