Some days there are appointments, pain, anxiety, grief, fear, and a whole lot that people never see.

On August 14, Cayenne Wellness Center brought sickle cell warriors and advocates from Los Angeles to the East Bay together for a historic trip to Sacramento. The group delivered 1,000 petitions straight to Governor Gavin Newsom and advocated in the offices of Senate and Assembly leadership to defend vital care.

Sickle cell disease is a painful, lifelong condition affecting 11,000 Californians. Because this community has been historically overlooked in medical research and support, warriors, who are predominantly Black and majority women, face a median life expectancy of only 54 years.

To combat this disparity, Senator Sasha Rénee Pérez officially requested funding to maintain crucial programs for the next three years. These dollars provide free emergency transport, mental health counseling, childcare, and hospital ER support.

With federal funding running out on August 31, the same day the legislative session closes, state leadership has yet to lock in ongoing support. Major organizations like BWOPA-CA and the NAACP CA/HI State Conference are urging state leaders to step up and safeguard these critical resources.

Your voice can make the difference. California must invest in sickle cell warriors with the same dedication it shows to other vulnerable communities.
