June's Gifts
Planting flowers is a practice of patience. Especially this year as I was gifted Zinnia seeds to plant. Each seed, precisely placed 1/4 in down and 6 inches apart with water and sunlight will by June have the beginnings of their summer show. Usually, I would put in the plants already blooming from the nursery. There is instant gratification in that. So, I will see how this goes. (This photo is from last year at Mangus Farm) Just like the seeds, I will be taking my time to nourish my body, mind, and spirit with water, sunlight, and rest. I hope you do as well. Enjoy the gifts of summer.
Addendum - I drafted this email the morning I was going out to garden. The sun was bright and I felt the rush of spring ready to flow into summer. Gathering my tools and plants, I went for the gas-powered leaf blower for its power and faster work as opposed to the battery pull the trigger blower. It has always been difficult to start, and as I pulled for the 4th time on the line to start the engine, my balance was thown instead. Down and back I went with such force that I broke my leg near the hip.
As I lie on the ground I thought," well this changes things again". A few choice words flew out of my mouth each time I tried to move. There is more to the story and I will jump to the end to spare your time.
I am home, recovering after surgical repair doing little chair yoga and breathing along with my PT exercises. There is a deep gratitude for my yoga practice as I know I would not be doing as well as I am without the gifts of the practice. Breathing in healing, breathing out tension and pain. The strength in my upper body and right leg help me to move with confidence, and my awareness helps me to know when to exercise and when to rest. Keep up your practice!!
Summer at Selah Studio - -
I know you can assume by now that I will be taking a break, from teaching until September. Though I am doing well I am aware of the need to allow enough time and space for healing.
I encourage you to find a class or instructor to continue your practice and recommend Hillary in Hector.

Monday Meditation - Fitting In - My mind likes to create the perfect fit for who I am. My descriptors and my schedules guide my day and it all fits. That is until life gets complicated or the unexpected happens. Then I can choose to squeeze myself into place or I can find the opportunities for change and growth. I am in such a season now. Are you? When I move into living from the expansive space of mind, body, and spirit, wholeness happens. Explore the heart of wellness at Selah. If you were taught "Breathwork" techniques that promise fireworks and/or psychedelic experiences, but leave you feeling anxious or exhausted, you may want to try something different.

Prāṇāyāma, which is where most “breathwork” techniques come from, is meant to be long and subtle - Patanjali says: "dīrgha-sūkṣmaḥ."

In terms of the neuroscience behind it: if your breathwork includes fast and/or shallow breathing, what you’re doing is sending signals to your nervous system saying: “Something isn’t right. Stay alert. Stay guarded.”

These are sympathetic nervous system signals, stressful to your whole system (and yes, there are yogic techniques that are fast, but they’re not technically prāṇāyāma they’re kriya and used for specific cleansing purposes).

Learning to slowly move into longer, more subtle, easeful, mindful breathing does the opposite.

It clears your mind and helps you organize your thoughts. And it helps you expand your breathing threshold capacity without stressing out your system.

Here’s something that can help (and it’s just a tip, it doesn’t replace the training and practice where the real gold lies): complete your exhale.

Don't push it out, just let it find it’s natural course. Use a tiny bit (like five percent) of your abdominal strength to help.

Most of the prāṇāyāma research shows good results around this simple idea - take your time and learn to exhale.

And do it at least once a day, for at least five minutes. Think about prāṇāyāma practice as a mini-vacation from the crazy pace of modern life.

Monday Meditation - waiting
In this season the practice of waiting is teaching patience and the unknowns are guiding me in flexibility. As spring seems resistant to warming so life hangs on for my mom’s process of transition. Here I grow and learn so much. It is all sacred time.
Selah is on schedule for Thursday at 6:30 pm and Saturday at 8:30 am
Unless of course there is a change. Thank you for your patience and flexibility! Keep an eye on your messages this week

Monday Meditation - Things along the path
A friend pointed out this stone on our walk in the woods. Something she noticed and I didn’t see was not just a stone. The shape of it and the lichen growing as it lay on the ground touched my own heart with awareness of being seen.
Not just seen but loved for all of my rough edges and messy places. Know that you also are seen and loved.

Monday Meditation - Curiosity and Wonder
I find my souls connection to all that is Holy in nature. To lift my eyes to the night sky with wonder and to discover a plant I have never seen before with curiosity is sacred. This is what holds me grounded.
Studio is closed after Wednesday this week.
Take time to wonder. Do you know what this plant is? It was new to me,
!

Monday Meditation - for when the path is not clear
When the path ahead seems uncertain
Where clutter could trip us up
Or mud can make a slide back down the path
We hold onto something
Something steady something firmly rooted
To steady us and help us move forward
What helps you along your path?
