6 things your massage therapist wants you to know.
Your massage starts before you get on the table. A few thoughtful choices can help you arrive comfortable, prepared, and ready to unwind.
1. Hydrate throughout the day.
Sip water regularly before and after your appointment. You don’t need to chug a huge bottle right before your session—normal hydration and a bathroom stop will help keep you comfortable.
2. Give alcohol a break.
For a conservative approach, avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and 24 hours after your massage. Alcohol can increase fluid loss and disrupt sleep, even when it initially makes you feel sleepy. Before your session, it can also dull pain sensations and make it harder to give accurate feedback about pressure. Arrive sober and feeling well, and choose water and rest afterward.
3. Be mindful of caffeine.
If coffee or energy drinks leave you jittery or restless, skip the extra serving before your appointment. Afterward, be mindful of late-day caffeine that could interfere with sleep. You don’t have to give up your usual morning coffee—suddenly stopping a daily habit can cause withdrawal headaches. The goal is to feel comfortable, not wired.
4. Arrive fresh and keep fragrance light.
A shower or quick freshen-up, especially after exercise, is appreciated. Use your usual deodorant, preferably lightly scented, and leave strong perfume or cologne for another day. No shaving or special grooming needed.
5. Keep it simple and comfortable.
Makeup is optional, but going without it may feel more comfortable in the face cradle. Remove bulky jewelry and bring a hair tie for long hair so your neck and shoulders are easier to access.
6. Share what matters—and speak up.
Tell Torrie about new injuries, health changes, medications, skin sensitivities, or areas that bruise easily. During your massage, ask for adjustments to pressure, temperature, or positioning whenever you need them. More pressure doesn’t automatically mean a better massage.
A little preparation helps Torrie tailor your session—and helps you settle into time that’s just for you.
