Ipswich was back in the headlines last week.

And I'm not talking about the cigar controversy.

The school that lost its athletic trainer after a serious injury at a lacrosse scrimmage just reposted the position... again

This time as “full-time.”

Except the AT component is 0.4 FTE. The other 0.6 is Health Teacher.

Same community. Same demand for more AT coverage. 40% of an athletic trainer.

Apparently ci**rs weren’t a major topic in that health class either...

43% of postings were collegiate.

The 20-week average is 27%.

Late spring is when collegiate programs post. Contracts end. Budgets get approved. Staff walk.

The Los Angeles Kings just posted their Head Athletic Trainer position.

$200,000 – $230,000.

It is genuinely refreshing to see a professional sports organization post what a role like this actually pays. This is a clinical Head AT position — managing the daily health and medical operations of an NHL roster. And now candidates know exactly what it’s worth to the Kings before they ever submit an application.

California requires salary disclosure on job postings, so the Kings didn’t have a choice. But that’s exactly the point. When organizations are required to show their hand, this is what the top of the market actually looks like. $200,000 to $230,000. Bonus eligible. 401(k) with employer match. Eight years of experience required.

For context — the highest ceiling we have tracked on this board was a combined Head AT and Healthcare Administrator director role at Keck Medicine of USC at $240,240. The Kings posting is purely clinical. No director title attached. Just the job.

Imagine how many professional sports AT postings would look different if every state required the same thing.

At the other end of the board — an orthopaedic group in Maryland posted a role this week listing a BOC-certified athletic trainer and a medical assistant as interchangeable credentials at the same pay rate.

The ceiling and the floor of this profession showed up in the same week.

It's Memorial Day. If you’re working today, we see you.

109 new athletic trainer jobs on the board this week. Here’s what stood out.

The PWHL posted three expansion franchises with transparent salaries in three consecutive weeks.

Detroit. Las Vegas. Now San Jose.

PWHL San Jose Head AT: $95,000–$105,000.
PWHL San Jose Assistant AT: $70,000–$78,000.

Three weeks. Three franchises. Real numbers every time. The league is building something and telling candidates what it pays. That is not always the norm in professional sports.

Amazon also posted an Injury Prevention Specialist in Jacksonville, FL at $60,200–$90,200 with sign-on payments and restricted stock units. RSUs in an AT job description. Think about that.

And the most overlooked role of the week:

Liberal USD 480 in Liberal, KS — dual AT and CTE Instructor, 15 sports, ~400 athletes, $71,619–$102,093 ceiling. In a market well below the national average on cost of living. Getting scrolled past because of the zip code.

The AT Compact is one state away from going live.

Six states have enacted the model legislation. Alabama, South Dakota, Kansas, Kentucky, Virginia, and Nebraska — the last one signed by Governor Pillen on April 14.

New Jersey introduced its bill this past week. Roughly ten more states have legislation actively advancing.

The seventh enactment is coming. When it does, the compact becomes effective October 1, 2026. That means licensed ATs in member states will be able to practice across borders without re-credentialing in each new state.

This is a structural shift the profession has been asking for. And it is closer than most people realize.

Not every week has a $240,000 salary or an NFL spotter role. This week was quieter. 121 jobs on this week's Athletic Trainer Finder weekly newsletter and job board. There were two postings that subscribers flagged and I went back for a harder look.

The first: A D-I Director of Sports Medicine reposted this week after sitting open for a month. Same job. Same salary. The market already answered. They reposted anyway.

The second: A Vermont hospital posted a BOC-certified AT role at $22–$26/hr. The Medical Assistant at the same clinic tops out at $28.52. Same building. Same surgeons. The MA needs a high school diploma. Vermont is just where this one happened.

The Cleveland Browns posted an Athletic Trainer Spotter role this week. $125 an hour. Home games only. NFL concussion protocol oversight from the video booth. Most ATs have no idea this job exists.

A TBI Diagnostic Center in Federal Way, WA is hiring an AT to diagnose traumatic brain injuries using laser eye tracking and QEEG technology. No experience required. $80,000–$85,000. Monday through Friday. I had never seen a role like this before this week.

And UC Davis posted an Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine budgeted at $75,000–$90,000. In California. Where a one-bedroom in Davis runs $1,400 a month. Moving into administration in a high-cost state doesn’t always pay the way people think it does.

That’s three conversations most job boards won’t have with you.

A lacrosse scrimmage in Ipswich, MA ended in a serious injury. No athletic trainer was on site. No athletic director. A failed response.

Within days, the school's longtime athletic trainer resigned amidst the negativity surrounding the incident.

The district's response? Repost the job. Part-time.

This week includes the highest salary ceiling we’ve seen so far, with one role reaching $240K — a clear example of what the top end of the profession can look like when it’s structured like a true healthcare operation.

A few roles worth highlighting:

• Senior Director, Athletic Medicine (USC) — $145,600–$240,240
• First Assistant Athletic Trainer (Seattle Sounders FC) — $85,000–$90,000
• Manager, Medical Administration (MLS) — $80,000–$85,000
• Injury Prevention Consultant (Onsite Ergonomics) — $90,000
