Vermont Oxford Network Transforming data into action to help save babies lives.

Vermont Oxford Network (VON) is a nonprofit voluntary collaboration of health care professionals working together as an interdisciplinary community to change the landscape of neonatal care. Founded in 1988, VON is now comprised of teams of health professionals representing neonatal intensive care units and level I and II care centers around the world, in support of our mission to improve the quali

ty and safety of medical care for newborn infants and their families through a coordinated program of research, education, and quality improvement projects.

One of the most valuable experiences at the VON Quality Congress is the time spent learning from other teams about real-world, data-driven improvement in their units. We invite you to share your improvement stories and research during the Poster Session, Saturday, November 7th.

No abstracts are required to bring a poster. Simply let us know the title of your poster and a brief description of your project by August 1st. Learn more at https://bit.ly/VONQCPosters!

Note: Teams participating in All Care is Brain Care collaborative who would like to be considered for a presentation and/or 2026 VON Award for Excellence in Quality Improvement will need to upload a digital version of their poster by September 1st.

NEC Awareness Month reminds us that improving outcome starts with understanding the full story behind every infant’s journey.

Through the Vermont Oxford network VLBW database, centers collect more than outcomes alone. Data includes important parts of the birth story-including antenatal steroids, maternal hypertension, delivery details-as well as feeding practices, NEC diagnosis, surgical interventions, and human milk feeding at discharge home. Together these data points help teams identify patterns, benchmark outcomes, and guide meaningful quality improvement efforts.

Quality improvement is not built on assumption. It's built on data collaboration and continuous learning.

Every data submission represents an opportunity to better understand that risk, evaluate practices, and improve care for infants and families across the network learn more about the VLW database at https://bit.ly/VLBW

One of VON's core values is collaboration. To us, that means collaborating with teams and the worldwide community.

We are rooted in the idea that VON members dedicated to data-driven quality improvement have changed the landscape of neonatal care because we have created a culture of improvement together. We recently celebrated this at the NICQ homeroom onsites, where improvement stories were shared and ideas were gathered to take back to home teams.

And we believe everyone has a role in improving care. We want all our team members to come together and celebrate those successes and this improvement community. We hope you will join us in November in Chicago for the VON Quality Congress. You can read details on poster submission, agenda, and registration here: https://bit.ly/QC26Registration

Today is NEC Awareness Day, a day to pause and raise awareness to improve research, prevention, and support for those affected by this severe intestinal disease. At VON, we track rates of NEC every year and while rates of these outcomes have been steady over the years, there remains variation in outcomes when sorted by race. We encourage centers to use this data for quality improvement projects to improve the care and outcomes of infants and families in the NICU.

During NEC Awareness Month, we want to highlight the rates of human milk at discharge. Looking at data from the VLBW database, we see that human milk rates at discharge remain low and there are disparities across race and ethnicity. Human milk is essential in the NICU and used as a preventative measure for NEC. We see there is work to be done to help improve human milk use as one path towards reducing NEC rates.

May is NEC awareness month. At VON, we monitor data for trends and identify areas for improvement. In review of data related to NEC, we see a decline in rates from 2010-2012, but have seen steady rates over the last few years. Research on NEC reduction strategies is ongoing and needed - there is no one single cause or one risk factor. Therefore we must monitor things such as antenatal steroids, admission temperature, and breast milk use. VON databases support data tracking and benchmarking year to year for members locally and for the network as a whole.
