CMV Public Health and Policy Conference Come hear the latest updates on cytomegalovirus (CMV) research; public health initiatives for CMV aw

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital infection found in developed countries. Pregnant women who contract CMV can pass the virus onto their unborn baby, which can result in multiple disabilities including: hearing loss, vision loss, poor brain growth, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and, in rare cases, fetal death. Recognizing the lack of awareness about CMV and its potential devastating e

ffects on babies, Utah lawmakers led the nation by passing a bill that directs the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) to establish a public education program to raise awareness about CMV and ways to prevent its spread. As part of the education effort, UDOH, public health advocates, and healthcare providers came together to share ideas of how to get the CMV message out to women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. The Cytomegalovirus Public Health & Policy Conference is part of this effort. The goal of the conference is to provide education, delineate prevention efforts, offer information about early intervention options, help other states in replicating Utah's policy efforts, and disseminate family support resources in an effort to reduce the number of babies born with CMV and connect families affected by CMV with the resources they need to improve their quality of life.

💙 Did you know?

Congenital CMV is the most common infectious cause of childhood hearing loss.

Many babies with congenital CMV show no symptoms at birth, making awareness and early identification critical.

June is CMV Awareness Month. Throughout the month, we'll be sharing information and resources to help raise awareness about congenital CMV and the importance of early identification.

💙 We'd like you to meet Deb Eskelson!

If you've ever needed advice, a connection, a listening ear, or just someone who knows the answer, chances are Deb is the person to ask. 😊 One of Deb's favorite sayings is, "A jack of all trades is a master of none, though oftentimes better than a master of one." Anyone who knows Deb knows that's pretty fitting. A longtime Cache Valley resident, Deb is known for her deep community connections. Whether she's helping a customer, supporting a coworker, or sharing knowledge on just about any topic, she's always willing to jump in and help.

Deb has been with Utah State University for more than 30 years, but her Aggie roots run even deeper than that. Her parents were USU students and were part of the student group that helped install the student section seating in the Spectrum so students would have seats instead of sitting on the concrete. Her sister was a student-athlete, and multiple family members have worked at the university. Supporting Aggie athletics has been a family tradition for generations. In fact, if there's an Aggie football or basketball game, chances are you'll find Deb and her family there cheering from the stands. They're proud Aggies through and through.

When Deb isn't supporting HiTrack, her coworkers, or the Aggie community, she's spending time with her favorite people—her family. She loves attending the events and activities of her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, whether that's sports, dance, or simply spending time together playing cards, board games, or puzzles.

And somewhere in between all that, she still manages to find time for a little quilting too.

Thank you, Deb, for the knowledge, kindness, and support you bring to NCHAM every day. 💙

🎉 P.S. It's also Deb's birthday this week! If you see her around, be sure to wish her a happy birthday or send her a quick note to help celebrate her special day. 🎂

“Early intervention can change everything for a child’s future.” 🩺✨

We’re sharing this clip from a recent U.S. Senate Committee hearing highlighting the impact of Congenital CMV and the importance of newborn screening and early detection.

As Dr. Karl White shared, it is incredibly encouraging to see conversations about congenital CMV, newborn screening, and hearing health happening “on the Hill” and being brought to the national forefront. Awareness at this level matters — because when CMV is identified early, outcomes for children can improve significantly.

We’re grateful to see these important discussions happening not only in hospitals and clinics, but also at the national level. 🏛️

👇 What are your thoughts on the push for universal CMV screening?

Newborn hearing screening is more than a test — it’s an opportunity to provide families with critical information that can support positive developmental outcomes from the very beginning.

The NHSTC offers interactive, evidence-based online training designed to prepare hospital screening staff for newborn hearing screening. Training includes OAE and A-ABR screening techniques, communication with families about results, and more.

Certification is $50 per person. Recertification is $25. Group pricing and vouchers are also available.

✨ Things We’re Loving This National Speech-Language-Hearing Month ✨

This month we’ve loved seeing more accessibility, inclusion, and representation in everyday spaces. 💗

Small moments of connection and support can make a lasting impact for children and families — and it’s always meaningful to see more opportunities for communication, inclusion, and accessibility in everyday life.

What’s something that has helped you or your family feel supported or connected? ✨

As we continue doing this important work in early hearing detection and intervention, I’m often reminded of one of my favorite quotes. 💙

So much of what we do is centered around connection, support, and involving families every step of the way.

Because when families feel informed, involved, and supported, meaningful understanding can happen. 💙
