Jessica Churchill believes co-creating with the magic of plant kin builds a better world for all beings. As a folk herbalist she focuses on building reciprocal relationships with the plants, not just utilizing them as commodities. Practically speaking this looks like not only ingesting herbs but also working to slow down to a sustainable pace and spending time in the garden, meadow or forest. While understanding physiological workings of herbs, Jessica’s approach is energetic and spiritual in nature with a goal of building rest and resilience practices in the face of the challenges of living in modern times. Bodies are not intended to move at the pace of capitalism and Jessica works with clients to support the body and create ease and balance in their lives.

Motherwort - what a beautiful friend. Up and thriving right now all over Burlington!

How to identify:

🌿 Leaves: Deeply lobed, palmate dark green, prominent veins. In its early growth stages, the leaves are seen a basal rosette close to the ground (all originating from the same point, in a circular sort of shape). Slightly hairy.

🌱 Stem: Square, like most other members of the mint family (motherwort is not aromatic like other mints, but it is a mint!).

🔍 Location: Often found along fence lines, garden peripheries, edges of roads or paths. Usually in partially shaded areas, although it tolerates full sun.

It's much easier to identify when it's gone to flower due to it's uniquely spiky calyx around the flowers the grow in the axils of the leaves. It's also best to harvest it once it's gone to flower. Keep a look out for it in flower around June or July. Harvest the leaves, from a clean location.

We use motherwort all the time in clinic, especially for people who experience anxiety in their chest, i.e. heart racing.

It's best in a tincture because it's quite bitter, but you can use a tea as well, or just munch on the fresh leaves!

Note that some people may have allergies or may not be able to take motherwort due to their meds or underlying health condition. Please double check for safety.

Let us know if you have any questions!

P.S. Want to grow your own herbs this season? Check out our plant sale this Saturday! Info here: https://www.railyardapothecary.com/store/p732/Annual_Seedling_Sale--HJF_Fundraiser.html 💚

Stinging nettle vs. wood nettle - what's the difference?

Stinging nettle and wood nettle are often thought of interchangeably for culinary use. Not much information is available for the medicinal properties specific to wood nettle. Both can be a tasty springtime edible after simply blanching the stinging leaves (make sure to harvest them before they've gone to flower).

Similar as they are they belong to different genera of the Urticaceae (nettle) family - stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) & wood nettle (Laportea canadensis).

Wood nettle is considered to be lighter in flavor, and preferred by some for that reason.

Wood Nettle can often be found at higher elevations, and deeper into the forests, offering wildcrafters an extended timeframe to enjoy harvesting nettles.

One of the easiest ways to tell them apart is that stinging nettle has opposite leaves, meaning that the leaves go up the stem in pairs growing from opposite sides of the same point. Wood nettle on the other hand has alternate leaves. Please consult a good guide and identify 100% before harvesting for consumption!

Since wood nettle is a native species please take extra care when harvesting this plant, i.e. simply snip off the top couple inches so the plant continues to grow. Please be respectful of stinging nettle too - often nettle will let you know when you haven't been so!

Happy spring!

One of our dearest beloved herbs, nettles is one we often call on during allergy season. This is because it seems that it may have anti-histamine-like effects. But also, it's growing right now! One of the first green plants to pop up in the spring, it's a sure sign of the changing season.

Check out the post for more and let us know if you have any questions! 💚 🌿

2 amazing medicinal plants you can grow from seed or starts this year:

🌿 Tulsi

Tulsi is a favorite for growing at home. Related to culinary basil, tulsi is also known as "Holy Basil" because it is highly revered in India where it is from. The leaves and flowers grow plentifully, and similar to calendula the more you harvest the more it grows - simply trimming back the plant a few inches at the nodes will cause it to grow out rather bush-like, making just a few plants enough to supply a small household.

Medicinal benefits: Dry the leaf and flower to make an uplifting, aromatic tea that supports a positive outlook, supports the immune system, and has "adaptogenic" effects - helping our body adapt better to stressors.

How to grow: Start seeds indoors in the spring, or direct seed into the garden, or grow from starts.

🌿 Calendula
Calendula is such a fun and beautiful plant to grow! It grows very easily from seed and often self-seeds itself, coming back year after year. And the wonderful thing is the more you harvest the flowers, the more it grows!

Medicinal benefits: Use the fresh flowers to make an infused oil. This can be applied externally on its own or made into a salve to moisturize and heal the skin. The flowers can also be made into tea for internal healing, supporting the lymphatic system, and for brightening the mood.

How to grow: Direct seed into the garden or containers in the spring, or grow from starts.

🌿 Annual plant sale coming up on Saturday, 5/23, more info here: https://www.railyardapothecary.com/store/p732/Annual_Seedling_Sale--HJF_Fundraiser.html
