Fresh or dried? Which is best? The way we do things here at Trillium is based on a bit of learning from your mistakes and a bit of how we approach plants as a whole medicine and not just a single constituent.

For water based nourishing infusions- we go for the tried and true dried plant. The drying process opens the cell walls making sure we get all the nourishment and tonic aspects of plants like nettle or oat straw.

For alcohol extracts, most of what we make here is from fresh plant. I love the tradition of capturing the full matrix of the plant and processing it into medicine just minutes following harvest.

There really isn't anything better than making a juice or a "chew" or essence water from fresh plant. But I would be lost without my small home apothecary with my favourite dried herbs available when needed.

Compared to dried herbs in commerce- you can not get any better herbal medicine than from the plants you harvest and dry yourself.
Dried herbs from Amazon or even the very popular massive herb retailers & food co-ops- comes from very far away from who knows what type of facility. (Be sure to read the fine print for the origin of what you may consider a local herb.)
Always, when possible- harvest and dry your own herbs. There are some great dehydrators out there now- we have the Excalibur 9 tray. Do it yourselfers may buy the book "Dry It- You'll like it" for a detailed plans on making your own.

Or buy DIRECT from farmers or personal wild crafters. Your herbal remedies are only as good as the herbs you use to make them.

What's your favourite way to use herbs? Fresh or dried?

If you are on social media or listening to a podcast or worse- seeing TV ads ~ you may be thinking that something is wrong with you. Culturally- what is wrong with you is highlighted with louder frequency than what is right with you.
Especially as women. The noise around women's health and well being is even louder. And with good reason- I acknowledge that it's a scary and unprecedented time.

But- and there is a but here.....In general, we are OK. And that's where herbs come in to the picture. What I love about using herbs in wellness, healing, supporting is the myriad ways that plants show up.

I am out with students every week witnessing their beginning or continued journey with herbal medicine. We meet plants and share story and the "This herb for this and this herb for that" part of herbal education. We also talk about ways to invite herbs to be a part of our WELLness- our "I am OK"- ness.

What does that look like? That is the part where you sit with the plant and allow the plant to show you what it has to offer you. Or maybe what you have to offer the plant.
It may or may not be very different from the "this herb for this problem" aspect of your herbal knowledge.

Last week when gathering roses - we spoke of how the Rose is supportive for the grief experience and also for giving and receiving Love. There is a big gap between grief and Love- Or is there?
One of the ways to gather rose to support us is to intentionally gather the rose in bud before the flower has opened. These can be strung together to make a garland or a lei to wear yourself or gift to someone in their healing process.
With each rosebud you string together - there is an opportunity of prayer or visualisation or raising the healing vibration- whatever you want to name it.

My experience with gathering rose and weaving rose into lei has been healing to my own process and as an offering to others. There have been times that the offering to others was silent and unknown to them- It is these times that the plants seem to do their best 'work'.

How are you showing up for yourself? How are plants showing up for you? We sometimes think plants are here for us. But what if we are here for them? What if their plant constituents and healing capabilities are just the surface of what they can do you?

Plants don't watch TV commercials that subliminally tell us what's wrong with us. Plants don't even read the herb books that tell us how we can be 'Fixed.'

Plants do tend to remind us that we are vibrant, living beings.
They are happy to see you when you show up.

I’ve been waiting for this one- Stellaria media, Chickweed . This is a key ingredient in our famous Everybody’s Salve. A neighbor recently injured 3 fingers when one of her horses spooked while moving to a spring field. Her hand was caught in the lead trapping the fingers as the horse bolted. Swollen, bruised and very responsive to chickweed to soothe and cool the inflammation and begin the repair along with comfrey and plantain.
