iliopsoas (Psoas)
My what hurts?

What is the iliopsoas? Commonly referred to as the Psoas.

The iliopsoas is a large compound muscle of the inner hip composed of the iliacus and psoas major muscle.

The iliopsoas is the primary hip flexor that's part of the inner muscles of the hip and the posterior abdominal wall. It's among the deepest layer of muscles in the body, and muscles found in this layer are a key part of functional movement. It plays an important role in maintaining the strength and integrity of the hip joint. It also assists in external rotation.

The iliopsoas muscle is the only muscle in the human body that connects the upper body to the lower body.

What does psoas pain feel like?

✋It can cause pain in the low or mid back, SI joint, hip, groin, thigh, knee, or any combination.
✋Often a deep aching pain can be felt in the front of your hip in the crease.
✋A clicking or clunking sensation or sound when flexing your hip (lifting your knee up).
✋Sharp pain with sitting and standing, especially after prolonging sitting.

What has years of being a bodyworker taught me?

✋that most clients come in complaining that they have a hard time standing upright in the shower first thing in the morning.
✋It hurts to go from a sitting to standing position
✋They often think the pain is in their lower back and are surprised when you tell them you need to access it through their tummy.
✋Working on the iliopsoas requires a tremendous amount of trust between the client and therapist and does not have to hurt.
✋I truly believe you have one opportunity to access the iliopsoas during a treatment session.
If the client trusts you, the nervous system is relaxed and will allow you into the muscle.
✋The muscle is the seat of the soul.
It can store a lot of emotion, especially grief and trauma.
✋Psoas work can provide relief and sometimes just having an understanding of what the function of the muscle is and how it causes pain helps the problem.
✋The psoas can cause shortness of breath because of the fibrous attachment along the thoracic spine near the diaphragm.
✋Licensed massage therapists cannot diagnose, but we do treat symptoms associated with pain and discomfort.

🔥Over the next few weeks, you may get a little something extra during your massage. 🔥

We’re introducing the Synergy Stone Heat-Wave, adding soothing warmth and custom pressure to your massage.

While our therapists get familiar with incorporating the Heat-Wave into their massages, we’ll be offering complimentary samples during select sessions.

Love it? The Heat-Wave will be available as a $15 add-on to any massage.

Somewhere, one of my 2 chemistry teachers is cringing…
So I’ll go with massage therapist alchemist 😂

Been thinking of adding an essential oil scalp massage to your session? We’ve got some great essential oils blended with jojoba to choose from.

Whether you want something calming, uplifting, seasonal, cooling or simply because it smells amazing, you can choose the blend that fits your mood that day.

And yes, I spent my Sunday afternoon carefully measuring and mixing these. Apparently this is what I do for fun now. 😂

Just ask your therapist to add an essential oil scalp massage to your next session.

The ups
The downs
The good
The bad
and sometimes, the ugly
Early morning's, late nights
Staying longer during the holidays
Or because a client was hurting.
Steady growth
The friendship I didn't know I needed.
A sounding board
A calm presence
I called Lisa because God whispered her name to me when she had donated a gift card to a fundraiser at Highland elementary. I knew by the time I got to the car I was going to call her.
So grateful to have listened to that whisper. God knew what I needed before I did.
We've been together a long time.
At this point, Lisa and I have just about outlasted my marriage.

Technique matters. But presence changes everything.

A great massage is more than knowing the right techniques. It’s having a therapist who is fully present — who listens, pays attention and adjusts the session to what your body needs that day.

That combination of experience, skill and genuine care is what we believe good bodywork should feel like.

We have massage availability this week at Body Works Massage and Wellness Center. We'd love to make some space for you 🙂
