Trillium Institute

Trillium Institute Trillium Institute advances the quality of life through the end of life.

Trillium Institute was launched in 2014 from a recognized need to educate the community about best practices in dealing with serious illnesses. The institute was challenged to find fresh ways to help those with life-defining illnesses as they navigate the complex medical options, and equally complex emotional burdens that await them. The institute focuses on two distinct audiences:

Patients and t

heir families are looking to the institute as a resource for information about how to prepare for serious illness, how to navigate the healthcare delivery system in the face of a diagnosis, and how to communicate their values, preferences and desires to preserve the quality of life as disease processes advance. The medical community looks to Trillium Institute as a resource to train practicing physicians, medical students, residents, nurses, physician assistants, and social workers in the art of clear communication in crucial conversations with patients and their families. Trillium Institute also supports advanced medical training for selected physicians who aspire to become board-certified palliative care physicians. Trillium Institute is affiliated with Holland Home, Michigan’s oldest and largest continuing care retirement community. As part of the non-profit organization, Trillium Institute is supported by visionary donors who resonate with its mission and purposes.

Today marks one year since the passing of Dr. John Mulder — a devoted husband, loving father, and a truly remarkable physician whose life was defined by compassion, service, and unwavering dedication to others.

Dr. Mulder spent his career caring for patients and families at their most vulnerable, championing hospice and palliative care and helping bring dignity, comfort, and peace to countless lives. From delivering babies early in his career to becoming a nationally recognized leader in palliative medicine, his work was never just a profession — it was his calling.

He was a teacher, mentor, and advocate, shaping the future of care through his leadership, his work with the Trillium Institute, and his commitment to ensuring that every person facing serious illness was treated with compassion and respect.

But beyond his many accomplishments, Dr. Mulder will be remembered most for his kindness, his humility, and the way he made people feel seen, heard, and cared for. His legacy lives on in the countless patients, families, colleagues, and students whose lives he touched.

One year later, he is deeply missed and forever remembered.
