If fabulous YOU need’s a drink to connect with your husband, partner or date. It’s not connection 💥
After a couple of drinks: alcohol slows activity in your prefrontal cortex — the part of your brain responsible for judgment, self-monitoring, and reading social cues. Looser? It’s NOT YOU though. Think where this has happened?
Alcohol dulls your limbic system — the amygdala & hippocampus, the parts of your brain responsible for reading facial expressions and registering emotional connection. This response is weaker with more alcohol that is in your system.
How would it feel, to lean into the silence, coming back to the beginning vibe between you? When was the last time, you had a sober date? Whether it’s someone new or sitting across your husband of years.
Here’s a few things to try.
1.✨Time together, doesn’t have to include a drink. Try a walk before dinner, a class together, a wellness practice like yoga, cooking side by side. Finding something new to support you both, does more for connection. It took years for me to realize this and it’s better than ever.
2 ✨Make eye contact. Put the phones away & actually look at each other for the first five minutes, before you sit down for a meal. It resets the whole tone of your time together.
3 ✨Ask real questions. Skip “how was your day”. Try “what’s something you’re proud of this week”, what’s something I haven’t heard about? What’s something lifting YOU up right now? Real conversation doesn’t need a drink to get going.
If silence feels uncomfortable without a drink. Don’t judge it, lean in. What has alcohol been doing for the relationship?
Personally, when it was negative for my husband and I, before we gave up drinking, it could end in toxic, stupid disagreements. With no productive outcome, only hurt and guilt.
If you automatically reach for that drink, to get things with your person. 🛑
YOU ARE fabulous just as you are. The journey of embracing this, yourself, is profound and takes a commitment that’s worth it.
