Picky eating is common in childhood, but when mealtimes become consistently stressful, it may be worth looking a little deeper.

If your child:
👉 Eats a very limited range of foods
👉 Gags frequently
👉 Avoids certain textures
👉 Takes a long time to finish meals
👉 Has difficulty chewing
👉 Becomes very distressed around food
👉 Refuses most new foods

…it may not simply be “picky eating.”

Sometimes feeding challenges can be connected to sensory processing, oral-motor skills, chewing, or other feeding difficulties.

The goal isn't to force a child to eat more. It's to understand why eating feels difficult and provide the right support. đź’›

Does your child struggle with any of these at mealtimes? Let us know in the comments or save this post for later.

“Is my child just a late talker?” Well, it’s one of the most common questions parents ask when they notice their child’s speech or language developing differently.

Every child develops at their own pace, but if you’re wondering when to be concerned about your child’s speech, it’s okay to seek guidance rather than simply “wait and see.”

You may want to consider a speech-language evaluation if your child:

👉 Isn’t using words as expected for their age
👉 Is difficult for others to understand
👉 Has trouble following directions
👉 Struggles to put words together
👉 Has difficulty communicating wants and needs
👉 Has lost speech or communication skills they previously had

An evaluation doesn’t mean something is “wrong.” It simply helps you understand where your child is developmentally and what support may help.

If you’re searching for pediatric speech therapy in Los Angeles, Nurture Collective is here to help families better understand their child’s communication needs.

Save this post if you’ve ever wondered whether your child’s speech is developing as expected.

If your child covers their ears, becomes upset around loud noises, or avoids places because of certain sounds, you may be wondering, “Why are they reacting so strongly?”

Sometimes, this can be related to sensory sensitivity. Children can process sensory information differently, and sounds that feel manageable to one child may feel overwhelming or even distressing to another.

You may notice your child:
👉 Covers their ears frequently
👉 Avoids toilets or hand dryers
👉 Struggles with everyday household sounds
👉 Becomes overwhelmed in noisy or crowded places
👉 Becomes upset when unexpected sounds occur

Instead of thinking “Why are they overreacting?”, it can help to ask: “What might this sound feel like to them?”

Understanding your child's sensory needs can help you respond with more support and less frustration.

If sound sensitivity is interfering with your child's daily routines, school, play, or participation, a pediatric occupational therapy evaluation may help you better understand their sensory needs.

If you’ve noticed your child struggling with everyday tasks, you may be wondering whether pediatric OT could help.

Occupational therapy can support children who have difficulty with things like:

👉 Getting dressed independently
👉 Handwriting, pencils, or scissors
👉 Using utensils or managing mealtimes
👉 Sensory sensitivities to sounds or textures
👉 Emotional regulation
👉 Balance and coordination
👉 Everyday routines and independence

Pediatric OT isn't about making a child fit a certain mold. It's about understanding why a task is difficult and helping them develop the skills, confidence, and strategies to participate more comfortably in everyday life.

If you're wondering whether your child's challenges are something they might benefit from support with, an occupational therapy evaluation can help provide answers.

Parenting doesn’t come with a step-by-step manual and when your child is struggling with development, sleep, feeding, big emotions, or daily routines, it can be difficult to know what to do next.

You might find yourself wondering:
👉 “Is this part of normal development?”
👉 “Why is this so hard for my child?”
👉 “Should we seek professional support?”
👉 “How can I help without making things harder?”

The good news? You don't have to figure it all out alone.
Pediatric therapy can help families better understand their child's individual needs and build practical strategies for everyday life... whether that's through occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, feeding therapy, or developmental support.

Asking for help isn't a sign that you've failed as a parent. Sometimes, having the right support simply makes the journey a little easier.

What part of parenting feels the hardest right now? Tell us in the comments. You may not be the only one wondering.

If your child becomes upset when plans change, struggles with transitions, or seems much calmer when they know exactly what comes next, they may be relying on predictable routines to feel safe and regulated.

Children often thrive when everyday routines are consistent because knowing what to expect can support:

✅️ Easier transitions
✅️ Better sleep routines
✅️ More positive mealtimes
✅️ Emotional regulation
✅️ Learning and new skills
✅️ Growing independence

This doesn't mean every day has to follow a perfect schedule. Even small, predictable routines can give children a sense of security and help them feel more confident navigating their day.

And when routines do need to change? Preparing your child ahead of time, using visual schedules, and giving simple reminders can make transitions easier.

Is your child extremely selective with food, gags when trying certain textures, takes forever to eat, or becomes upset as soon as a new food appears?

These can be signs of feeding difficulties and they’re not always about being “picky.”

Feeding challenges can be connected to sensory sensitivities, oral-motor skills, chewing, swallowing, or difficulty managing different textures and tastes.

Feeding therapy can help children build the skills and confidence they need to have more positive mealtime experiences... one step at a time.

If mealtimes have become stressful in your home, you’re not alone.

What’s the biggest mealtime challenge your child experiences?

Your child isn't giving you a hard time. They're having a hard time.

Crying, yelling, hiding, hitting, shutting down... these aren't "bad behavior." They're a child's nervous system saying "I don't have the tools to handle this yet."

And that's okay! Because emotional regulation isn't something kids are born with. It's a skill. One they learn through connection, modeling, and practice with the adults who love them.

The next time your child melts down, try shifting from "stop that" to "I see this is really hard for you."

That one shift can change everything.

👇 Which of these behaviors shows up most in your house? Tell us below.

Please save this for the next hard moment.

When people hear “speech therapy,” they often think about helping a child pronounce sounds clearly. But Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) support a much broader range of communication and feeding skills.

Pediatric speech therapy may help children with:
👉 Understanding and following directions
👉 Expressing wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings
👉 Building vocabulary and language skills
👉 Speech sound production and clarity
👉 Social communication and conversation skills
👉 Stuttering and fluency
👉 Feeding and swallowing skills

And communication doesn't always look the same for every child. Some children communicate through spoken words, while others may use gestures, signs, pictures, or AAC.

The goal isn't simply to get children talking
It's to help them communicate, participate, connect, and feel understood. đź’›

If you've ever wondered whether your child's communication skills are developing as expected, a pediatric SLP can help you understand what they're doing well, where they may need support, and what steps can help.
