After months of counting days, he finally came home early, his heart racing with excitement.
He held a small teddy bear in one hand and his military bag in the other.
He imagined his wife’s tears, the baby’s laugh, the warmth of home.

A man’s voice echoed down the hallway, soft and too familiar.
He stopped breathing.
He walked closer, quietly, as if part of him already knew.
