One of the medicines to come out of these three months of drought and complete climate collapse across western Europe (yes, collapse, that is the fu***ng word for what just happened here) is that we have had to listen to the land differently.
Or maybe not differently. More honestly. I don't know. Something.
The land was already talking. We were the ones not listening well enough.
So we are rebuilding all our berry gardens. From scratch. Not because they were badly designed (well kind of). Because the world they were designed for is not the world we live in anymore.
One garden for blueberries. One for currants and gooseberries. One for raspberries. One for blackberries, the one in the photo (work in progress, need mulching, cover crops, etc).
We are using permaculture and Syntropic principles now. Capturing every drop of water coming down the hill when the sky finally does open. Planting winter cover crops to feed the soil while the ground rests. Building living walls of drought-resistant plants that shade the more fragile ones behind them.
Is any of this going to be enough? I honestly do not know.
I don't think anyone knows.
What I do know is that doing nothing is not an option. Waiting for someone in a suit to fix this is not an option. Pretending the last three months were "just a hot summer" is not an option.
There is so much to do. In each of our lives. In each of our yards. On each of our balconies. In each of our conversations. If we want any kind of resilience going into the chaotic decades already unfolding around us.
Plant something. Learn one old skill. Meet a neighbor. Save water. Watch how the rain actually moves across your land or your street. Get your hands dirty. Get your grief in the soil where it belongs.
We don't have to figure it all out.
We just have to start.
And keep going.
Even when we don't know if it will be enough.
Especially then.
