Mission to Save Monarchs in Ventura: Beauty to Save a Species 🦋

Right now, one of Ventura’s most important monarch overwintering sites—Vista Del Mar—is under threat. And what’s happening there is not isolated. The same development pressures are unfolding up and down the California coast, putting monarch overwintering groves at risk one by one.

The urgency could not be clearer.

The 2025 Western Monarch Count came in at just over 12,000 butterflies—down from millions in the 1980s—making this the third lowest population count on record, following the historic crashes of 2020 and 2024. Scientists warn that without immediate action, the western migration may not recover—and the monarch could face extinction by 2080.

With federal protections delayed and habitat loss accelerating, conservation organizations like Native Monarchs are being forced to step in and fill the gap—on the ground, in real time.

That’s why we’ve launched the Mission to Save Monarchs Donation Campaign.

This season, as the remaining western monarchs arrive along California’s coast to overwinter, Monarch Botanika has paused traditional product sales. Instead of commerce, these products are being used as a conservation tool—to raise urgently needed funds to protect sites like Vista Del Mar and push for stronger protections statewide.

🌿 How the Donation Campaign Works (via NativeMonarchs.org):
• $75 donation → Receive one Milkweed Seed Oil Facial Care Kit (free U.S. shipping)
• $150 donation → Receive two kits — Keep One, Give One

💛 100% of every donation goes directly to conservation.

Funds raised support:
• Protection and restoration of monarch overwintering sites like Vista Del Mar
• Creation of breeding habitat at inland sites using native milkweed
• Public education and advocacy to prevent future habitat loss

This is no longer a warning—it’s a crisis.

This is a fight worth fighting—for Ventura, for California, and for a species running out of time.

More hard news for monarchs—but we’re not backing down.

At the most anticipated (and dreaded) meeting of the year for monarch advocates, presented by the Xerces Society, the 2025 Western Monarch Count was announced as the 3rd lowest on record. This confirms what we’ve been warning for years: monarch populations have declined by over 95% since the 1980s, driven largely by habitat loss.

The Vista Del Mar tree destruction incident was also presented at this national meeting—putting Ventura in the spotlight, and not in the way any of us want to be seen. But this only strengthens our resolve.

Native Monarchs is not giving up. We are fighting to protect monarchs and their critical overwintering sites in Ventura and across California—but we can’t do it alone.

This isn’t a business announcement. It’s a conservation decision.

After watching trees come down at a documented monarch overwintering site here in Ventura County, I knew I couldn’t keep splitting my time and energy between growing a brand and trying to save habitat that’s disappearing in real time.

As a small business owner, pausing promotion and donating inventory is not an easy choice—but choosing the mission over profit was the only choice that made sense.

I’ve paused active promotion of Monarch Botanika and donated 100% of my remaining inventory to Native Monarchs to launch a donation campaign focused entirely on monarch conservation.

💛 100% of donations go directly to conservation.
🌿 One donation level includes a Monarch Botanika Milkweed Seed Oil skincare set as a Thank You.
🦋 A higher level includes two sets—Keep One, Give One—sharing the gift of conservation.

These funds help protect overwintering sites, restore breeding habitat, educate the public, and fight to save monarch habitat before it’s gone.

The western monarch population is down 99% since the 1990s.
The beauty brand will always be there—but monarchs and their habitat may not.

If you’re able, please stand with us and donate at NativeMonarchs . org

The monarch butterfly was supposed to receive federal protection as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
Instead, the Trump administration delayed the decision—pushing critical protections back a year or more, even as monarch populations remain at historic lows.

With habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate stress accelerating, delay equals risk.
The monarch cannot afford more time without protection.

If you care about monarchs and the Endangered Species Act, you must speak up now!

This was supposed to be the moment the monarch butterfly finally received federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.
Instead, the decision has been DELAYED for a year or more — while proposed changes could roll the ESA back to weaker 2019 rules.

At the same time, early results from the 2025–26 Western Monarch Count show populations falling again. This winter may be one of the lowest ever recorded.

🦋 The monarch cannot survive weaker protections.
🗓 We have just days left to speak up.
