This one is perfect for the practical “what do I do when I’m already hurting?” side of the episode.

Sometimes “fix your posture” isn’t the first thing your body needs.

If your back is already tightening up and your muscles are starting to compensate, trying harder to sit up straight or force yourself back into “good posture” may not be the best first step.

In this Real Life Rehab session, Kelly walks Hannah through a different approach:
Give those overworked muscles a chance to stop working so hard first.

That might mean sitting back with good support, letting your body rest for a moment, taking a few belly breaths, and allowing some of that tension to release.
Then you can begin to reconnect and reset.

It’s a small distinction, but it’s an important one: sometimes you need to support and release before you ask your body to engage again.

And that’s exactly what Real Life Rehab is about—looking at what’s actually happening in your body and finding practical strategies that work in your real life.

🎙️ Listen to “Real Life Rehab: Stop Chasing the Pain — Building Strength Before Your Body Has to Shout” on The Tummy Team Journey Podcast: https://thetummyteam.com/podcast/real-life-rehab-stop-chasing-the-pain-building-strength-before-your-body-has-to-shout/

Your body doesn’t always need you to push harder. Sometimes it needs a little support before it can do its job well again.

09/30/2026

What if you could hear what your body was telling you BEFORE it had to shout?

In this week’s Real Life Rehab, Kelly helps Hannah recognize something important about her recurring back pain.

When Hannah is at home, she often notices the first little signs of tightness. She can change positions, move, reconnect to her core, or give her body a break.

She hears the whisper.

But when she’s busy, out of the house, sitting through church, driving, homeschooling, or simply pushing a little longer, those early signals are easier to miss.

By the time the pain gets her attention, her functional strength has fatigued and other muscles have stepped in to compensate.

As Kelly puts it, eventually your body says:
“Thank you, but no thank you. I see you’re trying to help me, but that doesn’t help me.”

This is such an important part of moving from reactive rehab to proactive rehab.
Instead of waiting until the end of the day to stretch, roll, release, and try to undo the pain, can we learn to recognize those earlier signals and respond sooner?

Because sometimes your body whispers long before it shouts. Learning to listen is part of the rehab.

She went into pregnancy in some of the best shape of her life. Then everything changed.

Hannah was teaching Pilates, exercising regularly, and felt strong going into her first pregnancy.

Then came two babies in two years.

After her first, her stomach felt like “a big bowl of jelly.” After her second, she knew her body didn’t just feel a little different—it felt so much different.

Eventually, Hannah discovered she had a deep, 4½-finger diastasis. She started working on it, made progress…and then stalled.

That search eventually led her to Kelly and The Tummy Team.

And that was just the beginning of their story.

Nearly 14 years later, Hannah has had four children and moved through many different seasons of motherhood. She knows how to connect to her core. She teaches Pilates. She’s learned how to incorporate functional movement into her everyday life.

But lately, recurring back pain has been telling her that her body needs something different.

So she came back to Kelly for a Real Life Rehab session—not to start over, but to figure out what her body needs now.

🎙️ Listen to the new episode:
“Real Life Rehab: Stop Chasing the Pain — Building Strength Before Your Body Has to Shout”: https://thetummyteam.com/podcast/real-life-rehab-stop-chasing-the-pain-building-strength-before-your-body-has-to-shout/

Kelly and Hannah talk about moving from constantly reacting to pain toward noticing the earlier signals, building strength and connection into everyday life, and making small changes before the body has to shout.

Because needing support again doesn’t mean you’ve failed at rehab.

Your body changes. Your life changes. And the way you support it can change, too.

Sometimes the most empowering thing you can do for your body is understand it better.

Last week during Office Hours, Kelly shared part of her own diastasis story—and how overwhelming it felt when she was first given information about her body without many hopeful or practical tools for what to do next.

Learning to assess her own body, understand what she was feeling, and have strategies she could actually use changed that.

That’s exactly why we have Office Hours.

Every Monday, Kelly takes a topic that affects how you feel and function in everyday life and helps you better understand what your body may be telling you—and what you can do about it.

Sometimes the cheaper appointment isn’t necessarily the more affordable path.
It’s understandable to look at an out-of-pocket physical therapy session and think, “I can’t justify that when my insurance gives me a $20 or $40 copay.”

But Kelly brings up an important piece of the equation in this week’s podcast: look at the whole course of care, not just the cost of one appointment.

More individualized sessions may cost more upfront, but they may also allow you to spend more focused time with your therapist, need fewer appointments, and walk away with strategies designed specifically for your body and your life.

Meanwhile, multiple copays, coinsurance, deductibles, frequent appointments—and eventually seeking additional care because you still aren’t where you want to be—can add up too.

This isn’t about saying one model is right and another is wrong. It’s about knowing your options and considering the value of the care you’re receiving—not just the price listed for one visit.

🎙️ Kelly and pelvic floor physical therapist Megan Miller unpack the differences in “Pelvic Floor PT Didn’t Work for Me… Now What? Finding the Right Path to Healing” on The Tummy Team Journey Podcast: https://thetummyteam.com/podcast/pelvic-floor-pt-didnt-work-for-me-doesnt-necessarily-mean-pelvic-floor-rehab-wont-work-for-you/

What if the goal of rehab wasn’t to depend on a physical therapist forever—but to understand your own body?
That’s what Kelly wants for every Tummy Team client.

She wants to give you more than strategies that help in the moment. She wants to teach you how to recognize what your body needs, understand why something may not be working, and have lifelong strategies you can return to again and again.

Years ago, people were traveling from California, Alaska, and beyond just to work with Kelly in person. But there were simply too many people who needed this information and too few providers doing this kind of functional core work.

So Kelly found another way to get it to you.

That’s how The Tummy Team’s online approach was born.

The goal is still the same: to partner with you, educate you, and ultimately help you become your own physical therapist for your own body.

If your rehab only works when you have time to “do your exercises,” it’s probably going to be hard to sustain.

You’ve already had a full day. You’ve worked, cared for your family, made dinner, answered emails, run errands—and now there’s a huge list of exercises waiting for you?

As pelvic floor physical therapist Megan Miller explains in this week’s podcast, effective rehab should be something you can build into the life you’re already living.

That might mean finding opportunities throughout your day to work on alignment, core connection, breathing, mobility, or the specific areas your body needs support.

Because the goal isn’t to give you one more thing to feel guilty about not getting done.

It’s to give you strategies that actually fit your life.

Your rehab should give you more than exercises. It should give you tools you can actually use in your life.

That’s an important distinction Kelly makes in this week’s podcast.

The Tummy Team programs aren’t designed to simply put on a video and have you follow along with a generic set of exercises.

They’re designed to help you understand your body.

Why are we working on this?
What should you be feeling?
Where are you compensating?
And most importantly—how does this apply to the things you do every day?

Because the goal isn’t to become really good at rehab exercises.

It’s to take what you learn and have strategies you can use while parenting, working, exercising, lifting, resting and moving through your real life.

Knowledge gives you options. And understanding your body gives you ownership.

Your core rehab shouldn’t only work while you’re “doing your exercises.”

What happens when you get out of bed?
When you lift your child out of the crib?
When you use the bathroom?
When you exercise?
When you have s*x?
When do you notice leaking? Back pain? Tenting through your abdomen?

Those moments are giving you valuable information about how your body is functioning in real life.

That’s why The Tummy Team isn’t just about giving you another list of exercises to follow. We want to help you understand what your body is telling you, recognize your patterns, and learn how to support your core and pelvic floor throughout your day.

Because ultimately, the goal is for YOU to understand your body.

Your body whispers before it shouts. Are you listening?

When something hurts, our first instinct is often to focus entirely on where it hurts.

But Dr. Hilary Frescoln encourages her patients to get curious.

What were you doing before the pain started?
How are you sitting while you work?
What does your posture look like while you cook dinner?
How do you sleep?
Are you always carrying your child on the same side?

Sometimes a simple video or strategically placed mirror can reveal movement patterns you didn't even realize you had.

Not so you can criticize how you move—but so you can become a detective. 🔎

As Kelly says in this conversation, awareness is 50% of the solution.

Your body's signals are information. Instead of immediately powering through or assuming something is wrong with you, get curious about what your body might be asking you to change.
