Every year, millions of people around the world hear the words, "You have lung cancer."
Sadly, that number is expected to rise in the decades ahead. According to the Global Cancer Observatory, the annual number of new lung cancer cases is projected to increase from 2.64 million in 2024 to 4.61 million by 2050.

Behind every one of those numbers is a person, a family, and a series of critical treatment decisions.

But lung cancer is not one disease.

Patients with the same diagnosis can have completely different molecular profiles, meaning they may respond very differently to the same treatment. That's why comprehensive biomarker testing has become a cornerstone of modern lung cancer care.

Some of the most meaningful advances in precision oncology begin with a simple question: What are we still missing?

After three years of collaboration, the Eurostars-funded Genomic Noise Cancelling (GNC) consortium has completed its research project, exploring how computational approaches can help distinguish clinically meaningful molecular signals from the background complexity of cancer biology.

The project combined advanced bioinformatics, computational reasoning, and clinical expertise to improve how complex molecular profiling results are interpreted. By reducing irrelevant findings while preserving biologically meaningful information, this work has the potential to reveal treatment opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked.

While the project has now concluded, its impact continues. The knowledge, technology, and collaborations established through GNC are already helping shape the next generation of precision oncology tools and supporting more informed treatment decisions for cancer patients.

Most of us know that too much sun can damage our skin. Fewer people realize just how significant that damage can be.

According to research from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), more than 80% of melanoma cases worldwide are attributable to UV radiation. That's an estimated 267,000 of 332,000 cases in a single year.

Reducing UV exposure is one of the most effective ways to lower your risk. But prevention is only part of the story.

If skin cancer is diagnosed, it's important to remember that melanoma is not a single disease. Two patients may receive the same diagnosis yet require entirely different treatment approaches because the molecular drivers of their tumors are different.

Understanding the biology of an individual tumor can help reveal:
↗ The genetic alterations driving cancer growth
↗ Potential resistance mechanisms
↗ Which therapies may be more or less likely to benefit that specific patient
