How Age, Hormones, Genetics & Environment Affect Your Skin
Our skin is constantly changing. While your skin type may stay relatively consistent, factors like age, hormones, genetics & your environment all influence how your skin looks & functions over time.
1. As we age, our skin naturally undergoes several changes.
* In your 20s: Collagen production begins to slow, though skin often still appears firm & resilient.
* In your 30s: Fine lines may become more noticeable & skin cell turnover starts to slow.
* In your 40s & beyond: Skin produces less oil, loses elasticity & wrinkles, dryness & age spots become more common.
2. Hormones play a major role in your skin’s oil production, hydration & overall appearance.
* Puberty: Increased hormones stimulate oil glands, often leading to acne.
* Menstrual cycle: Hormonal fluctuations can trigger breakouts, especially around the chin & jawline.
* Pregnancy: May cause increased pigmentation, a healthy “glow”or acne due to changing hormone levels.
* Menopause: Lower estrogen levels reduce collagen & natural oils, leading to thinner, drier skin.
3. Your genes influence many characteristics of your skin, including:
* Skin type (oily, dry, combination or normal)
* Natural skin tone
* Sensitivity
* Collagen production
* Tendency to develop acne, eczema or pigmentation issues
* How quickly your skin ages
While you can’t change your genetics, you can care for your skin in ways that support its unique needs.
4. Your surroundings can affect your skin every day.
* Sun exposure: UV rays speed up premature aging, increase pigmentation & raise the risk of skin cancer.
* Pollution: Can contribute to inflammation, dullness & damage from free radicals.
* Cold weather: Often strips moisture from the skin, causing dryness & irritation.
* Hot, humid weather: Increases sweat & oil production, which may contribute to clogged pores.
* Indoor heating & air conditioning: Can reduce moisture in the skin, leading to dehydration.
