Camden Healthy Start Camden Healthy Start is a program of the Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative. Far too many babies in Camden are dying.

We provide services and support to pregnant women and mothers with children up to 18 months old. Our city’s infant mortality rate is double that of the state and nation. This is completely unacceptable, and we know that many of these deaths can be prevented. Camden Healthy Start provides services and support to ensure every birth is a healthy birth. We reach out to pregnant women and new mothers to connect them with the health care and resources they need to nurture and care for their children. Our staff uses proven strategies to reduce preterm birth, low birthweight, birth defects and other key factors that cause many infant deaths. We also work to address the social and economic factors that negatively impact child health and development. Infant mortality is an important measure of a society’s health and success. We must work together to make sure all of our children get a healthy start.

Grief can change everything.

For families who have experienced the loss of a baby or loved one, there is no "right" way to grieve and no timeline for healing.

If someone you love is grieving:

💟 Be present. You don't have to fix their pain.
💟 Listen without judgement. Let them talk, cry or simply sit in silence.
💟 Acknowledge their loss. Saying their baby's name or remembering their loved one can mean so much.
💟 Offer specific support. Help with meals, errands, childcare or everyday responsibilities.
💟 Keep checking in. Support is important long after the funeral or initial loss.
💟 Give them space to grieve in their own way. Everyone's experience is different.

Most importantly, don't be afraid to say something because you're worried it won't be perfect. A simple "I'm here for you" can remind someone they don't have to carry their grief alone.

At Camden Healthy Start, we recognize that supporting healthy families also means supporting families through loss.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give a grieving family is simply to stay.

The Cooperative's President & CEO and our Camden Healthy Start Father Involvement Specialist recently joined the New Jersey Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics for the the New Jersey Early Relational Health Summit, 'Innovating for Families’ Futures,' in Somerset.

Our team not only heard from local and national experts about how to promote strong caregiver-child relationships that support healthy development, well-being and resilience—but also participated in the afternoon breakout session, 'Supporting Fathers and Caregivers in Practice.' During that session, we provided participants with practical strategies to meaningfully engage fathers and diverse caregivers as essential partners in early relational health and child development.

🫁October is Healthy Lung Month!

Chronic lung diseases are common, with millions of people affected in the United States.

How can you keep your lungs healthy?

✅Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.
✅Get your COVID and flu vaccines to prevent severe respiratory infections. If you’re pregnant, over the age of 50 and at increased risk of illness, you can also get an RSV vaccine.
✅Improve air quality in your home by changing air filters, dusting and vacuuming.
✅Wash your hands frequently to avoid upper respiratory illnesses.
✅If you have asthma or COPD, always have your quick-relief medication with you.
✅Exercise regularly to strengthen your lungs. Move in a way that feels good to you!
✅Stay hydrated by drinking enough water, herbal tea or electrolyte drinks.
✅In cold weather, wear a mask or wrap a scarf loosely around your nose and mouth to warm up the air before breathing it in.

When should I be concerned about my lung health?

✔️You have a chronic cough that lasts more than eight weeks.
✔️You’re experiencing shortness of breath or wheezing.
✔️You have chronic mucus production or are coughing up blood.
✔️You have chest pain that lasts for at least a month, and it gets worse with breathing and coughing.

If you have any of the above symptoms, talk to your doctor or care provider.

On World Mental Health Day, observed October 10th, we continue to raise awareness about mental health issues and mobilize efforts in support of mental health.

Together, let's break the stigma by having open conversations and prioritizing our mental well-being.

Whether you’re seeking support or offering it, remember - no one should struggle in silence.

Let’s create a world where mental health is understood, accepted and supported.

💓October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness, encourage early detection and remind women that their health matters.💓

Breast cancer can affect anyone. Knowing what is normal for your body can help you recognize changes that may need medical attention.

✔️ Talk to your healthcare provider about your personal risk.
✔️ Schedule your mammogram.
✔️ Perform breast self-exams.
✔️ Know how your breasts normally look and feel.
✔️ Report any new or unusual changes to your healthcare provider.
✔️ Stay up to date with recommended breast cancer screenings.
✔️ Encourage the women you love to prioritize their health, too.

👪 And for our moms: taking care of yourself is part of taking care of your family. Your health matters. Not just for today, but for the future you're building with your little one.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Camden Healthy Start encourages you to know your body, ask questions and advocate for your health.

Early detection saves lives.

The campaign entails an outdoor billboard campaign consisting of 10 digital billboards positioned in Camden and Burlington Counties, and one static billboard on the Atlantic City Expressway in Atlantic City. The billboards received more than 300,000 impressions reaching more than 50,000 unique individuals.

The Cooperative joins in celebrating National Midwifery Week, observed this year from October 4-10.

National Midwifery Week was created by American College of Nurse Midwives to celebrate and recognize midwives and midwife-led care.

Midwifery care, backed by rigorous scientific evidence, improves birth outcomes and enhances patient experiences. As a profession rooted in history, midwifery is vital for the future of healthcare, with proven success in reducing maternal and newborn mortality, even in resource-limited areas.

💜October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

💜 Domestic violence occurs when an individual commits acts intended to harm or instill fear in another when a special relationship is present. This special relationship can involve current or former intimate partners, or household members. The abuse is not only physical, but can be verbal, and may include sexual assault, threats, financial control and/or isolation.

💜 Domestic violence is nationally recognized as a public health issue and causes serious health-related consequences. Victims and survivors may experience physical injuries like broken bones or head trauma and endure long term effects due to chronic stress and anxiety.

💜 Help IS available. For resources, check out this site from the New Jersey Coalition to End Domestic Violence ➡️ https://bit.ly/46xYn4v.
