Black drawing salve is a traditional topical remedy designed to "draw out" splinters, stingers, toxins, and impurities from the skin.
The combination of zeolite/activated charcoal and bentonite clay acts as a powerful porous magnet for debris, while lavender and tea tree oils soothe the skin and provide antimicrobial properties.
How the Ingredients Work
Zeolite & Activated Charcoal:
Known for their highly porous structures, these act as adsorbents. When applied to the skin, they bind to dirt, toxins, and venom.
Bentonite Clay: When activated by moisture, this swelling clay acts as an astringent. It helps absorb excess fluid and pull embedded foreign objects toward the skin's surface.
Tea Tree Oil: Extracted from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant, this essential oil is well-known for its potent antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to prevent infection at the site of a wound.
Lavender Oil: Known for its calming fragrance, it also offers mild antiseptic properties and helps reduce the stinging, itching, and redness associated with localized skin irritations.
Plantain Leaf (Plantago major): Often called the "green bandage," plantain contains allantoin, a compound that stimulates cellular growth and tissue regeneration. It acts as a natural anti-inflammatory that rapidly takes the sting out of bites and promotes faster wound healing.
Pasture-Raised Lard: Lard is nearly identical to human sebum in its fatty acid profile. This allows the salve to pe*****te deeply into the skin layers rather than just sitting on top, delivering the active herbs, charcoal, and clay directly to the root of the irritation. It also keeps the skin soft and flexible so the drawing action doesn't cause painful drying or cracking.
Common Uses People frequently keep drawing salves in their home apothecaries for the following needs:
Splinter Removal: Helps bring splinters (wood, glass, metal) close enough to the surface to be easily grasped with tweezers.
Bite and Sting Relief: Draws out venom from bee stings, mosquito bites, ticks & spider bites.
Skin Blemishes: Used to draw out impurities to help heal boils, blackheads, and localized acne.
Irritations: Provides temporary soothing relief for poison ivy and poison oak.
Make sure to bandage, it will stain clothing!
